Fine to run 2wd short term if you don’t go gunning it. I ran FWD for few short necessary trips didn’t like it. Front wheels kept lighting up even with 32s. access for shaft bolts is awkward but that’s got your name on it
9/16” or the 9” angled version ;)

I think I’ve sort of come to the same conclusion. A refurbed VC is £330 if anything else in the transfer box is shot it’s going to be a better bet to do the whole thing for £745…

It’ll need to wait until at least next month though. (Ribs and wallet !)

Can I just double check, if I remove the front prop shaft is it safe to drive it 30 miles or so ? (Effectively rear wheel drive)

There’s nothing that wouldn’t work correctly is there ? ABS, etc ? And even if the diff is shot, it won’t do more damage will it ?

thanks again

Bob
If you can get transport I've got a full transfer box in the garage that's done 98k I'm in no rush to get shut of it so can wait until your ribs are better.;)

I doubt the transfer box needs to be replaced.

I agree but see post #39 and Bob is thinking of changing the whole TB.Lot easier just doing the VC.;)

I’d read somewhere that after 100k you had to watch for the belt, oil pump, seals etc - but that might have been Ashcroft putting the fear into me persuading me to go the whole way.

it’s just having been bitten and managed to b*gger up two differentials, I wondered whether it might be the ‘safer’ long-term option…

That said, my old lady has done 207,000 miles (replacement engine @ 147,000) and is only just starting to keel over !
@tomcat59alan did you mean it’s easier to replace the whole box or it’s easier to just replace the VC ?

thanks again

Bob

It's easier to replace the VC but if the TB has done over 200k I'd be inclined to replace the lot. It's an awkward bastid to change ,I've done it on my own with no jack( many years ago pre strokes) if you're getting a garage to do it shouldn't be a problem. It weighs 112lb in old money and is an awkward shape.

50kg !!? With my ribs ?

will get a price from a tame
Garage but it’ll likely be a few hundred no doubt…

Will have good think to see whether I feel
I can do it l myself or whether it’s beyond my level of competency. Bottom line is it likely needs doing.

Are the auto and manual transfer boxes the same, i thought they were different, unless your tb is from an auto.

Transfer box is a doddle with one of these:D

Looking at the Ashcroft site there are two TB`s for the p38 manual and auto so looks like they are different, i believe its the input shaft, Wammers would have told us in a shot he is greatly missed :(
Looking at Rave only one is mentioned, too wet and windy to go in the garage and to photograph the label. @jamesmartin may shed some light

Rain stopped and the sun came out as well so this is the label on the box I have, you are correct about Ashcroft so if the number isn't the same I guess they're different, check your number @awkwardbob .

My special 9/16th spanner’s with a hex ring (instead of 12-pointer) came today so if the ribs permit, I may go and crawl
Underneath the old girl and have a look
