hi to you all am completely new to this and have spoke with a couple of you lovely people already. having some issues with the wiper stalk on my free lander and have had to temporarily disconnect it as when it is connected the wipers are on permanently and there is smoke coming from the stalk http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/images/smilies/confused.gif have been to rimels this morning to price one up but wondered if it actually would be the stalk or a different problem all together. have to say i came to you guys for advice before actually opening up the haynes manual but thats my next port of call. hopefully hear from some more of you wonderful people soon cheers

Welcome to Landy Zone.

A Gaylander that self combusts! Well that's an improvement anyway. :D

If it was me (by which i mean not perhaps the most safe method) then I would remove the shroud around the steering column, so I could see the switch, turn on the wipers and see where the smoke is coming from.

However, perhaps a more safe method would be to look at the switch and associated wiring and see if you can see any scorching. logically, as you can't turn off the wipers when connected, there are only 3 obvious causes. The wiring- if a short is causing continuous operation and overheating: The relay which could be stuck open - which again could cause a continuous current across the circuit or the Switch itself which might do likewise.

Now try reading Haynes.

lol a gay lander never heard that one before but thanks ever so much for the advice turns out it was the stalk but seem as though the job of removing the air bag and steering wheel is a three spanner job(good old haynes) i took it to my friends garage and let the proffesionals take the risk of an airbag going off in their face! again thanks ever so much for the advice

No problem, just don't tell anyone I helped as it will affect my "I've got a proper Land Rover" image.

Don't forget to stick around with the forum and who knows, one day you will be able to answer a question posed by a newcomer. That's what forums are for.

However, if you venture into "Anything Goes" do not be surprised if the answer to any problems with your Gaylander is a can of petrol and box of swan vestas, (except on Bank Holidays {just in case Hippo's watching}):D

ok thanks and mums the word on the help hope your image is withheld never know maybe one day ill get a proper landy too but for now the gay lander it is cheers
