Just about at the end of my tether with 'ole trusty' No quick fix on the FIF front, at least £600.
My other concern is that the engine has done 180k so is worn anyway and on getting the pump off I thought I'd might as well change the glowplugs. the old ones had broken up and obviously gone into the engine. I am sure that ceramic and piston rings do not mix well.

I have been offered a good running 1995 525td for less than the cost to fix the pump is this the way to go? or are there major issues with transplanting this engine. I have read up on swopping the top of the FIP so it will talk to the RR, inlet manifold etc. but is this the right way to go?

Thanks for your help.

As far as I am aware they are the same block, head and pump so you shouldn't have any issues on that front, it should bolt up to the gearbox fine, when you have both engines out, its easy enough to look at them and swap over anything that is different (like you say inlet manifold, if needed exhaust manifold if the turbo is in a different place which I dont think they are, engine mounts, alternator, power steering pump etc.) None of these are difficult to swap as the castings are the same. Hope this helps

Just noticed you say the 525 is only the td, not tds. The td has 115bhp and tds has 143. Whether that was because it had an intercooler or whether there is more to the tds engine than just that, I dont know..

Word has it that the only differences between the TD and thr TDS is the Intercooler and the ECU, which will both stay on the RR

Others have reported FIP compatability problems in that it will not talk to the P38 engine ECU. Do search it was on here a while back.

When changing these engines over the only thing you can't change is the FIP, the RR doesn't fit the BMW block, however through weeks of hassle and tears we eventually took a chance and changed the electrical unit on the pump, this is the top half of the FIP, the two pumps are wired completely differently. Take your time and make sure no dirt gets in, about 30 mins to complete, and you'll have a working engine.

Just an update chaps,
Bought a low mileage 525 td, engine was running as sweet as a nut for £400, pulled engine out of RR and 5 series swapped all sensors, ancilliaries and exhaust manifold and turbo. As tonyyzf said took my time and swapped the top half of the FIP, with a bit of fine tuning (Within about 3mm of travel) the engine is now installed and the RR is running like a dream.
Flogging all the parts (Turbo on BMW had just been replaced) and weighing the BMW in should return me just north of £400. A Bargain!
Even though I took delivery of a new E Class sport estate in December, couldn't wait to get 'Ole Trusty' back on the road.

Hi, I have a question about POWER STEERING PUMP for my P38 2.5DSE... It is the same as in the BMW 525tds (E39)? Can i use it? I apologize for my English :)

A 1995 M51 cannot be fitted with the plastic 2001 Land Rover manifold. Head will have no stud positions for it. The injection pump and the sump will need changing.
