There are 2 or three coolant temperature sensors depending on year, all in a line under the manifold, one for the gauge, one for the EDC and the third one at the back of the engine, if fitted, is a thermal switch to operate the aircon fans when an overheat occurs.
You need to get the correct one for the year of your car and to know if it's the one for the gauge or the EDC:)

I think the 1 for the EDC is above/around the injector pump and the 1 furthest is temp guage if that helps..

are the coded so i get the right one

The one at the back of the engine is for the aircon fans, not sure about the other 2, if he gets back with which sensor needs replacing I'll look it up.

All RAVE gives us is this...

its the one that thinks engine is cold and puts extra fuel in on starting is all he said . I have noticed my temp gauge doesn't go above the blue so perhaps if i just changed them both im bound to get it right

So, if the gauge doesn't move, that's the gauge sensor and doesn't affect the engine temperature for the ECU.
I think your mech doesn't know what he's talking about. Have you thought the engine might actually be running cold because the thermostat is missing/stuck open or the viscous fan has seized?

never thought about that il pop over to the local auto electrian who has the diagnostics and get it on his machine to check if its the sensors or not then once thats ruled out i can look at thermostat and viscous fan

Wrong! Front over FIP is engine ECU, centre is gauge, rear is aircon according to my book.:) Certainly the one at the end of the head nearest the bulkhead is the aircon one and it's not present on my 96.

Fair enough I was going by what microcat says

I think their picture is reversed somehow! I'm not 100% sure about the ECU/gauge positions as the drawings I have are pretty vague, but I'm certain about the third sensor for the fans as I have one car with and one without and I've tested the function. The 3rd sensor is just a thermal switch.
