Been through this palaver recently with a non working temp guage.
if your ecu temp sensor is faulty and thinks the engine is cold all the time ,you will always get the glow plug light hot or cold.
If your temp gauge moves up to the top of the blue lines then it's working and as wammers and data say change the stat, or check the v/fan
If however your gauge only goes onto the bottom of the blue scale and never moves from there, gauge sender is buggered .
