I know theres been a few threads by me about this. First thing a few months back was the heater going cold, which showed me the water was disappearing. No pressure on the cap either. Eventually I found that the expansion tank had a split on the side. Replaced it and at last I am getting the system to pressurise. However, now a few weeks later a bit cold so heater on and its cold. Water level dropped, put over a gallon of water in. Left it running with the cap off, still only mildly warm. Drove it with the capon, with it off. Ragged it up hills, still only mildly warm and hoses to heater dont feel like theres anything in them either and top hose soft too.

Where is the water going? there is pressure in the system and no obvious sign of water loss.
 
bleed it too ... sounds like an airlock .. then have a good hunt for the leak , must be going somewhere
 
Had a similar problem with coolant loss on me deepender, discovered it was the thermostat housin' gasket where it bolts to the engine. Only found it after a run and noticed some steam coming from around that area, might be worth a look
 
I think that you are gunna have to face up to the facts Rev!

If you are filling the system up proper, no air locks etc,and you are loosing coolant with no evident leaks then yeh head gasket's fooked and yon waters going into one of the pots (I'd say 3 or 4).

What's oil like?
 
OK so theres a possibility of a HG failure causing water to enter a cylinder. I take it this happens when the engine is stopped and the pressure in the system forces the water into the pots. But this was happening before I put a new header tank in and there was no pressure. I have taken heads off 'normal' ohv cars like Metros and astras, what are these like to do?
 
Not saying it is the head gasket (which would be with engine running) Rev but if you are losing so much water it's got to be going somewhere.

Have you checked "P Gasket" they only leak when hot due to alloy onto cast iron, look behind waterpump on engine block usualy leaves a white trickly stain/mark.

Waterpumps can also leak whilst running.

Are you sure it's bled properly?

Are your front carpets wet?
 
what happens when yer piston is going down the bore on the INDUCTION stroke?

It sucks. But the turbo provides positive pressure does it not?

Jason, the carpets arent wet and I can't see anything around the water pump, however it has been jointed with silicone by the look of it. The amount of water is a lot BUT it takes about a month to get to that level.

Later: just had another look. Jason I was looking at the watre pump from the front. I took a look behind it looking toward the front of the Landy. It looked messy on the front and side of the block in the area right in behind the alternator. I wiped it all down and started it up while shining a torch in and lo and behold there is water, a slow piddly amount but coming from somewhere on the front casing. It looks like directly underneath where the thermostat housing (I think thats what it is - top hose connects to it) Does that sound like P gasket then?

Let me know if you are going to do it your self and need help, easy to do but if not done right it will have to be done again.
 
Thanks Jason, I will be doing it myself. It would make sense to do it pretty soon because I keep topping up with water so antifreeze level will decrease. There is another forum (LR.com I think) where there is a step by step article with photos and quite a detailed description. I reckon I should be OK but I will shout if I get stuck. They also say theres a core plug you should replace while your there but I don't know about that. So I need a P gasket and a waterpump gasket. I might do the rocker cover gasket while I am messing with it and theres also a leaking oil cooler pipe and then theres...... where do you draw the line?

At changing the chassis & body shell!


Hardest point is getting bolts out that go through the waterpump as they get proper rusty and you might have to heat the alu block up to release them, also make sure that the mateing faces for "p gasket" are clean and flat,emery clothe around a flat object might be called for.Also dont forget to put a slim layer of instant gasket on both sides of "p gasket" when re-building-I did'nt on my first and had to do it again a week later:mad:

Ive got some blue Hylomar which is good stuff, I'll whack that on both sides of the gaskets. I am going to Bangor tomorrow I might be able to get the gaskets there.

Ey Rev, has all this started since you started putting veggy oil in yer monster?
You DID change the phoo phoo valve filter that links up to the googenhymer back feed pipe to the rad first i hope. :eek:

No its not since the veggy I have had a slow water leak for about 6 months its only now I have got to the bottom of it.

Not the phoo phoo valve but the double sprung anti backflow flange valve next to the spondolex......
