Question as per thread title: I need to replace the wheel bearing - at the least, the NSF one.

Lots of options, including eBay - but no idea as to what quality these are. I am tempted to go the SKF branded route, but wondered what your experiences are?

The local garage has offered the use of their bench press, which is nice: not sure that the cheap 10T presses are quite man enough (needs a 20T press???)

SKF are good in my experience.

I used a puller with no problems. Also lets you pull the bearing and hub flange in without putting strain on the wrong part of the bearing. Will find a link.

Like this one. Useful for many things. Careful with googling "how to pull....."

Hello Rob

Couple of things. Others may chime in.

When refitting your wheel bearing remember to ensure that the ABS emitter ‘tone ring’ is fitted in facing the inside of the hub. The tone ring is grey(ish) in colour(in my experience) but maybe a different colour. Also your abs Sensor protrudes slightly into the bearing housing in the hub. Take care not to damage this. If you do you may have to drill it out if it is the factory fitted one.. it will be ‘solid’. I did my rears during a suspension rebuild and used a press to fit them. A local garage maybe able to do that for you if you don’t have the tools etc.

Thanks for this - my 2001 Hippo has the earlier reluctor ring type ABS sensor - so I don't think this will apply to my car - but it is a potential cause for confusion: are the two wheel bearings essentially the same (i.e. can a newer ABS wheel bearing be used on an earlier car)? I just need to verify the correct part numbers before ordering (a little challenging to find on the Rimmers on-line catalogue).

My experience is that suppliers are standardising as follows...

1. Most Driveshafts now come with a reluctance ring that you tap off if car is post 2001. Needs to be removed for post 2001 or won't fit in hub.
2. Bearings are same size and so magnetic is easier to find and will fit ok. Obviously if pre 2001 the magnetic bit is wasted. Hopefully a weird field around one wheel won't upset anything !!
