Got it - now I remember

That is what I have been doing for donkeys years (IIRC, since at least 1985, when we bought the paper WSM from LR ! ) - a two stage PITA, requiring two torque wrenches etc. .... but I haven't had a wheel bearing fail yet.

When
they wear out, I replace them with Timken .... and I always use much better grease than specified - and from what I have seen in the wheel bearing kits which come with "grease", I probably use a lot more than "required" ( allegedly ).....

I also check them regularly, adjust as required .... and clean and re-grease if I have to go into the hub for any other reason....

Ooooh,there's a question.
I think the last one was on the Ibiza. Not sure if they came fitted to the new hub or not though.
That was fine for a couple of months until I came home in a particularly sporty fashion, lobbed it into a tight left hander and then the dash lit up with warning lights and buzzers went off. I pulled over, thought for a minute, switched everything off, counted to ten and switched back on...
SWEET! All is fine again, then drove home.
Next morning left home, turned left at the top of the road, down the hill to the right turn, braked, crapped myself a little as I overshot the turn due to what felt like a rock hard brake pedal with a jackhammer under it pounding my foot.
I've experienced ABS often enough to know this was ABS turned up to 500! With about 25% of the usual braking.
To cut a long story short, I fitted a new brake master cylinder, then another one on the advice of a so called VAG forum expert. He is good by all accounts, but rather wrong in this case. Then the ABS ECU was sent away to be tested. No fault found. BUGGER!
Then some bright spark suggested plugging into the OBD for some live data.
It turned out that three wheel sensors registered one speed and the osf registered a couple of mph slower. The difference grew the faster you went until the ECUs couldn't take it anymore, threw a wobbly and switched off.
The issue for me was that period between starting and throwing a wobbly. In that time you never knew what was going to happen when you hit the brake pedal: work, work a bit or jackhammer.
Once the system shut down the brakes worked fine.
It turned out that the original hub was faulty.
Since fitting the new hub I've had about 8000 miles of cruising and sporty(caning it) worry free motoring!
Well, all apart from the annoying twit in front of me in that BMW X5 who cut me up then glued itself to my tail as I blasted past him down a little quiet bit of dual carriageway at 85 until he put his blue lights on......

It’s when they start wanting me to fit the cheapest pattern parts they can lay their hands on when they’re already getting free labour I start getting fed up.
Or, "Why do I need two? Can't you just fit the one new brake disc / shock absorber?"
I've seen his normal customers come out with that sort of thing myself...

Well, the Disco went in last Tuesday to my cousin's with the knowledge that I needed it back for the weekend.
Friday morning at work I had a text informing me that there was nothing wrong with the front bearings. The little bit of play I felt in the osf was not the bearing but the steering arm...
Upon further investigation it was found that the nsr bearing was a bit buggered...
He had to chisel the bearing apart to get the hub off as the inner race had welded itself to the stub axle.
After phoning around some Land Rover specialists, they said to fit FAG bearings. According to his contact at BRT Bearings, Timken bearings are no longer the bees knees as allegedly some of their range are just repackaged bearings from other sources.
£130 and new bearings, gaskets, seals and stub axle later, it resulted in a nice trip out on sunday to the Land Rover Legends show at Bicester Heritage.
Despite the forecast of thunder storms, in the two hours we were there it was lovely weather!
Sadly two hours was all it took to have a good look around. Hopefully it will be better next year?
Saw a gorgeous Range Rover. I don't know about eating your dinner off it, you could perform surgery on it!
Anybody going to Malvern next weekend?

Can anyone guess what Prince Albert's favourite Land Rover may have been had he lived longer?
