Never really got on with the 300tdi. had a few and they would get a bit hot going up a long hill towing and never be right again. Never had much success fixing them afterwards either.
probably my least favorite of all of them.

200tdi is cool but only really appreaciated after a week in a n/a or 19j.

My personal favorite is the td5. 30+ mpg in a 90 and will kill a 200/300 on the road.
Better mpg and faster. Only real downside with the td5 is the cost of replacment engines and parts but that will come down with time as the 200tdi has done.

As far as the td5 electronics are concerned, so what. when it goes wrong, get it fixed in the same way as you would a golf or mondeo. its not the end of the world. their not un reliable either, my last but 1 disco td5 had 225000 on it when we sold it. still see every now and again in the area. bit smokey now but its now been chipped.

id never go back to a tdi for daily use after the td5, but for a green laner or farm truck the 200tdi is the king

my current td5 90 has only done 29000 miles and should last me 10 years.

never had a factory v8 defender but the v8 we put in a 90 years ago was a laugh just to dear to run nowadays.

My 2.5n/a was brilliant till I had to use it every day then I realised it was a bit slow... 200tdi gets my vote

2.5NA in my old 109. Pulls well, never misses a beat and seems to tow anything it looks at. Noisy and top speed with o/d is 65 mph whih is fast enough for an old Series but it'll do for me. Not saying it's the best engine, just making my comment.

I have already voted 200tdi, I have recently bought a 110 TD5 with a stage 1 tune !!

It's like "chalk & cheese" ;)

I agree ! But the TD5 is a lot better/reliable than you think, I previously ran a TD5 for 4 years and the only problem I had was a colasped turbo hose.

What can go wrong with a Td5 ? ECU is not realy prone to anything unless it get's water in it, Crank sensors ! Tank fuel pumps ! accelerator sensors ! immobiliser !

Can't think of anything else TD5 wise that's going to leave you stranded ??

I had a fleet of 6 brand new Puma engined 110's in Sierra Leone used for collecting cocoa in 2010. Within a year all of them were completely shagged and giving us no end of problems due to the poor fuel. I shipped over 6 recon 300tdi's and some conversion kits, whipped out the Puma engines and bolted in 300tdi's instead.
6 speed 300tdi was pretty cool.

But my vote is for TD5, big fan of that lump

until your electrics break and leave you stranded

+1 TD5's are great until they go tits up

Not denying that that you haven't had problems, but my dads had several that there has been a problem with a fuel injector wiring harness, very trivial, but has bricked the engine, but then I've also heard of them still running with a bad harness, but like a bag of nails

One that rattles like a tin of marbles and kicks out thick black smoke permanently. Well that's what most tratterers do. Must be by choice.

First thing that I did was to change the injector wiring harness !! Was working fine but why bugger about for only 30 snakes !
