i had a 19j 2.5td and the thing burned more engine oil than diesel and done 50mph 55mph tops down hill with wind behind me so done a 300tdi conversion, does 70mph piece **** an well happy with the engine.

I have only had and still have it, a 110, 1990, 200tdi. Mine has crossed the Sahara several times. Its now used as my daily. It has now done 150.000 miles and seems unbreakable.
I have changed Alternator and starter motor but otherwise everything is original.
200tdi gets my vote.

1uzfe - the engine landrover never fitted and a wild child at that.

Chevy V8's are better still than the lexus lump for land rover application.

Lexus/Toyota is more suited to lightweight kit cars as it's a revvy lump...

The push-rod Chevy's have a more suitable power delivery although yes... just about any V8 built in the last 20 years is better than the rover boat anchor.

buy me one and I can compare two conversions;)

Mines a defender 90 300tdi and its ace :D Its done just over 204000 and still drives like new. Its had the obvious basics.... services, bearings etc. I love it! Its got more than enough power for what i need it for and its bril on diesel! My pride and joy :p haha

Hiya nope it doesn't smoke it runs bril. It has got abit of an oil leak but only to be expected with something that's done that sort of mileage. Doesn't bother it though. Its proving to be abit abit of a pain hitting this cold weather though with electrical problems :/ just got to perservere with it though..... And not look at my bank account :p haha

200tdi for me, had the td5 previous and plagued with electrical gremlins, 200 is basic engineering and bullit proof, no sensors, no egr valves, no engine lights on all the time, mine is fantastic, love it

TD5 all the way, just buy a diagnostic machine then u can fix just as easily as any other. Treat it well and enjoy 250,000 out of it without a cough or a splutter. The question was engine here, and it's without a doubt the best.

If u think about it, LR spend multi millions on research and development each year. Why would they produce an engine that is worse than its predecessor! They're not stupid!

Really? My td5 was a dog, yes it was a nice engine when it ran, then blew a head gasket, turbo, endless electrical problems, all in all rubbish as it couldn't do what an engine is designed to do, fully serviced at just under 100k.

Landrover like any other manufacturer has to move with the times and bolt endless amounts of sensors and electrical crap on the engines to keep within emission laws, this does not make it a better engine, just more likely to have issues, baring in mind we are talking landrover here.

im looking at getting a defender soon, but surely the 2.4 ford engine would be the most reliable as its in the most recent defender??? obviously need at least £17k to buy one tho and i know not everyones got that sort of money.
