i bought mine after it being stood in a barn for 2 years. the farmer charged up the battery and she started first time :)

I bought a Standard Flying Twelve that had stood in a garage since the owner went to war in 1939. He never came back and his wife basically never went in the garage again, I got to the car last year and it was better than expected, although the battery was flat and would not charge...ha ha
I took out the plugs and poured in some releasing oil, removed the carburettor, went back the next week (having stripped and rebuilt the carburettor), refitted it. Removed and cleaned the spark plugs. Engine was free and turned on the handle. Connected a 12 volt battery and spun the engine with no plugs in. Then, with a temporary fuel supply, and after a bit of effort the bugger started. Exhaust fell apart so it sounded pretty bad, but it ran.

cheers for the replys guys. a big smile on my face over here hahaha

quite enjoyed that little story. sad and unfortunat. do you have any pictures up of it after you got it going? :)

Bayden_uk. being stood for two years is nothing if it's been vaguely protected from the elements. mine started first time, and then drove 40 miles back home, straight to an MOT station. only one big thing failed, and that was brake hoses, but other than that, it's been brilliant since. Had to do a couple of things like swap the alternator since, but that's to be expected for a 22 year old vehicle. probably helps that it was in the navy until 1996, so it was looked after really well before the farmer had it..

cheers for the reply mate :)

i know the defenders been well looked after. it was my friends dads and he never took it off road. the engin looked in mint condition but its been left outdoors and not in any shelter, so yes its has been hit by all the eliments. my main consern is the body its self. i lifted up the mats and inside was perfect. no rust at all. i would exspect the breaks to be seased up but i will soon find out :D

cheers for the reply mate

lol 117k on mine. I wonder if anyone's beat 200k :) The wikipedia article on land rover engines says that the 200tdi should be able to do 300k if properly maintained!

I know some one that's got a 200 tdi with over 400,ooo km's (that's going on for 300,000 miles) Well serviced and changes the cylinder head gasket every 200k km's by precaution.

My last 300tdi had nearly 200 000 miles and it ran like a dream!
