None of the above.

4.0 V8 cos it goes like billyoh and aint too bad in water cos its got coil packs behind the plenum - and an auto box which is ace at everything except going down dead steep hills.

tis not bad his V8  only got a 150 mile range though :p :blabla: ;)

Everone keeps sayign the V8s are fast. There not. My 4.6 range rover has a very tight new engine, but its far from fast. I think the hummers massive diesel engine in the defender would be a good call. :D:flame2:

Have you driven a Defender with the GM V8? I have and think its orrible - way too heavy at the front end. The gearing has to be so high to reach 70 mph its a slug as soon as it hits a hill.
Fast its not, off its road better, but the weight over the front axle kills the advantage.

The transfer box ratios are nice and high on these for sensible cruising and economy - my V8 is Overfinched with gearing to make it rev and a set of revised shift points to use the revs. Not fast as in car fast, by fast as in Defender fast.

Yea the ratios are too high, if u floor it its in 1st till about 60mph, but does work well day to day. What about the perkins engines then, are they any good?

Ive owned 2.5TD, 200tdi, 4.6 V8 and used a TD5 alot. The TD5 pulled abit better than the 200tdi, not alot though, and it had been chipped to 147hp! The electrics and plastic covers of the TD5 intimidate me, so my vote was for the 200tdi, but im sure the 300tdi is very similar. Also the 200tdi gets better milage than the TD5 did. Needless to say the 2.5TD was a "pos" compared to the tdi and TD5, but my TD was a bad example anyway. The V8 would never be good in a defender, too much fuel to justify the difference in speed. And theres the swimming argument.

Well I've just voted for the poor 2.5 petrol not only as it dint have a single vote but also (besides the fact it cost's me a fourtune to run) it's a bloody good lump that never misses bringing a smile to my face :)

V8 just because of the noise. Yes it might die if it gets wet, and yes it might drink more fuel than a cruise liner but it sounds sooooooooooo good.

this is gona come across as noobie and I might be answering it in the question. I have a 200tdi, in a 1991 defender 90. Is this a v8 engine? this means eight valves right?
