I knackered the sill button on the door so took the door panel off and the bastard piece of plastic wont glue back on. so ordered a new piece for 70 p
and paid 4 quid postage .life's a bastard sometimes o_O

Finished removing all ACE parts from my old disco, took them to be made up with hydraulic line and ordered a few parts.Replaced the rear wiper motor too. Also replaced the rear subwoofers with some JVC 600W ones which are pretty disappointing.. o_O

You don't need to use Photorobbers in order to put images onto the forum.
Place the cursor where you want the image to appear in your post then click the "Upload a file" button. You will then get a dialog box so that you can navigate to the picture location on your computer. When the upload has finished, you'll see a small thumbnail at the bottom of the page with the option to leave it as a thumbnail or post it at full size. When you've clicked the appropriate button just click on the "Post Reply" button.

It's snowy today. I'm in Wales so have been out for a drive this morning to admire the countryside and admire the Land Rover's capabilities too.
This is our road this morning:

The only wheel marks there are mine. Even the farmers haven't been out and about yet.

Again there's only my tyre marks there, Once from when I parked up and once from when I whizzed past in the other direction. It's quite a novelty having the roads to yourself. I trundled into town and filled up with diesel. The main roads in Newtown haven't been cleared and there are a few hardy souls trying to get about with 2 wheel drive cars and not getting very far.
 
Off to Derby today, but the steering grew stiffer and stiffer. The fan belt is five years old, so I was wondering if it was getting a little tired and not giving the power steering pump the torque it needed. I have a spare fan belt in the car so I stopped and swapped them over. No, that doesn't improve matters. However, a look at the underside of the pump itself indicated that there was a lot of fluid escaping. Ho hum, maybe I need a new pump. That's going to be fun to swap over as it is hard to get at, what with the air conditioning unit immediately above and all sorts of pipes around it.

Heheheh, the difference when you put a new pump on is like Night and Day ... In my experience it had been creeping up and getting stiffer over months. so when I got round to changing it I thought I'd broken something else 'cos it was (still is) so easy to turn .. and tracked and drove nice and straight again!! ;)

I've ordered a new one off LR Direct which wasn't too dear despite ending in a 'G'. I hope it comes quickly because I want to fit in another trip to Wales before Christmas. The old one is probably the one the Land Rover had from the factory, so it has lasted around 100,000 miles.

The clutch is getting more 'talkative' on changing gear, reminding me that it's about time for a new one. A while ago it used to make a noise first thing on a cold morning, now I'm halfway to Derby before the chatter on changing gear finally goes away. Must get myself the bits and earmark a weekend or so when I can get that dealt with.
 
Heheheh, ditto again .. Ive got a new clutch and bits ready to go in, in the shed .. One of these days .. :)

The de-mist is noticeably improved (much volume of air and more oomph out of the vents). Its not the strongest blowers ever but at least the warm air is able to get into the cab.
Some further upgrades to go in when I get round to it are a better seal/connection from the intake to the heater box, changing the corrugated pipes on the window vents for straight pipes and installing some installation (currently just bare shell inside at the moment).

I did think about swopping out the corrugated pipes, does it make a noticeable difference?

Maybe another job for the spring with @gstuart :D
 
My new power steering unit came today:

So I popped out to install it. Not such a difficult job as I thought - you can get at all the bolts from the front of the engine reaching down between the radiator and the block. Here's the old one:

Looks like it has been leaking slowly for a while as it is covered in congealed fluid and road dirt. The bearing feels rough and crunchy if you rotate the shaft. The steering is now much better, and feels even lighter than it was before. The only problem is that I read somewhere that the power steering system takes 3.4 litres, so I went out and bought four containers of power steering fluid. Topping it up used less than one, so I have loads left over.

The spare fan belt I put on the other day had begun shredding itself just on the way back from Derby and wrapped its remains round the water pump pulley. Good job I didn't need to rely on it for a long trip. The old one is back on now for the time being.
 
Finally got chance to order some bearings and stuff to re-build my locking diff. The pinion bearings and flange were all incredibly loose and wouldn't tighten so it needed a complete rebuild and I partially took it apart a while ago. I was going to have @jamesmartin look at it but a combination of time/money - lack of both, meant I'll have to try it on me own, how hard can it be? If I get it right I'll do me gear and transfer boxes ready for summer .. :)

Well it was bleedin' freezing, so I resigned meself to just cleaning stuff up. No parts washer, so plastic tub, 3 large spray cans of Brake Cleaner a pair of nitrile gloves a wire brush and a paintbrush were set to. No pics, but jeez my hands froze with the cleaner evaporating off, but what a good job it makes. Took a couple of hours and one of the cans of cleaner, to strip it all and clean it reasonably. Not measured anything but there appears to be very little wear on any of the parts so I'm happy to put it back together. So, came in, washed my hands in cold water and my hands burned! Took a while to get me fingers moving, jeez but our back yard is a bit parky!

If I remember I'll take pics tomorrow putting it together .. which will also depend on the temperature and whether I get our lass' car battery, filters and oil changed in time .. ;)
