Got to work early this morning to try and work out what is wrong with my landy.

Tried jumping it, same symptom, click and no turnover.

Tried different battery, same symptom.

Tried unlplugging the starter cable from the back of the ignition and starting that one. Again, nothing.

Finally I turned ignition on and bridged the solenoid to the starter with a spanner and it turned over and started up normally.

Would that suggest the starter motors solenoid is pooped? or something else? There is a click under the the fuse cover. Would it be that starter malfunctioning?

Bridging the solenoid contacts and the starter then working would suggest that the solenoid itself is fine but that there is no power to it when turning the ignition key to "start". Sometimes this is just a simple case of the power lead to the solenoid being loose or corroded. Have you tried taking this off and cleaning/tightening it? Alternatively you may have a faulty relay in the fuse box.
 
Ha seen that! possible idea but i like the idea of those juicy multfuel dervs

Plus point with cummins is it's known doable now and lt230 kit available.
Which takes a lot of specialist work out of it and will be more than you or your lr will ever need.
 
Had a slight fuel leak so I thought I would just tighten up the nut on the return fuel line on the injector. Of course it broke off. Had to replace all the piping as they don't sell just the one nut.

Turned out the spade connector on the solenoid had fallen off. Couldn't see if until i gave all the wires a bit of a tug! Do like a cheap repair.

tempting me more now ha. That is the one thing putting me of doing something very different, the work involved.
 
Services her today!


Need to get some bits for the cylinder head. I have a replacement second hand head to rebuild and stick on. My current one has exhaust studs that are stripped and its not holding the exhaust manifold tight enough. Plus a glow plug had snapped off on cylinder No. 4 so i thought its best to replace.
 
Not seen or heard them yet but son has just text me saying he has just fitted some bigger speaker's in, so i will have to go and see tomorrow :eek::)

Fuel was low, so I put some diesel in and went food shopping. When I came out it wouldn't start - starter turned over, engine turned over, so fuel was the culprit - there was air in the system. Easy fix, but I had no tools, so had to call out the recovery service, and it was fixed in 5 minutes.

Exit one embarrassed Defender owner........

fixed the electrics - no rear fogs, no ns sidelights and intermittent rear wiper (switches were full of corrosion). complete strip and clean ;)

front ns wheel bearing(s) next
 
went to see the parents and had to take the D1 to bow brickhill with walking the dogs as an excuse. managed to get myself cross axled and pop the osr spring out of it's seat so had some fun and the dogs got a walk :D
 
yep :D

filled her up again and worked out that on the trip to mk and back with sandy lane she managed 25mpg and with 3.5 ton behind her she can do 22mpg :D think the general mpg could be better but quite impressed with the towing mpg was expecting alot worse concidering the weight and the amount of long hills
