Over the last couple of days, in-between DIY and and fixing Fiat 500 brakes, I pulled out all the gearbox solenoids, tested them, cleaned them, replaced the internal harness and refitted the valve body cover. This was sealed with some leftover nasty sealer from the FL2 engine repair. Unfortunately I didn’t have anything else suitable to hand, so I kept away from this poisonous stuff as much as possible.

Hopefully I'll get the ATF later in the, so I can test the box, in the hope it's been worth my time, and long term health.
Having read your FL1 gearbox issues with interest, I might have my own fault developing. The gearchange from 4 to 5 is sometimes worryingly firm/harsh. eek.

Not on the Freelander, but been busy finishing off my barn conversion. Fitted new windows and roller doors. Have put 2 post lift in already. Should make a nice winter work environment!!!

You lucky lucky b#$♧*rd what I would give for a garage or somewhere dry & draft proof to work on my LR'S, just changing the transfer box oil on my D2 today the slight breeze blew the draining oil everywhere . Good on ya. Still green with envy

I took our Discovery Sport to the main stealers for it's service. £450 for the standard stuff - anything else is extra.

£450 for a service.

I bought my Hippo for little over half that and head the engine rebuilt for not much more.

I knew there was a reason I like cars of a certain age. MGs, Rovers and Land Rovers from the late 90s and early naughties are in a sweet spot. Good and generally reliable ECUs, without too much complication and CAN-bus nonsense.

(PS main stealers charge twice what you can get tyres for on line, and the charge for changing the rear discs and pads seemed ridiculous. Worse, it was something like £215 just to interrogate the ECU. I'd be better off buying a fault code reader. Anyone know of a good one for the Disco Sport?)

Hippo is doing just fine. I'll be doing its oil and filter service soon - but have to put my MG back together; it's just returning from the body shop in the next week or two... can't wait :D

You should be doing it yourself Rob. Th FL2 no more difficult to work on than anything else, so the DS shouldn't be any different.

Oil/ filter change on the FL2 costs £30, with another £25 if the fuel filter is added. ;)

I only took it to the stealers to maintain the full LR service history for re-sale! I'd love to get a new Defender when they're a bit cheaper on the second hand market - but our Disco Sport has so many bells and whistles, I think it'll be hard to replace!

Which is to say, if it becomes a long-term proposition, then I'll service it myself!

Only thing troubling me (I'll be sorting the rear brakes!) is how to disengage the electronic parking brake when the ignition is off... I am sure someone knows! LOL

Gotta love the Hippo!, Although, I'd love a DS. I'd quite like one of the French ones too.

I think the new Defender is a lovely looking vehicle, which probably has a similar complement of bells n whistles to the DS. ;)

I bet it's the same as the FL2 Facelift, which isn't difficult iirc.

I have an IID, but it's abilities on the FL2/DS/Evoque are limited. :(

I've just ordered a Mongoose cable which comes with SDD (probably a clone), for in depth diagnostic stuff, although I'll need a decent laptop running XP Pro Service Pack 3, in order for it to work.
I've plenty of current options for the FL2 which are the IID, WOW/Delphi, and Icarsoft I930.

If you are visiting at some point, you're welcome to try what I have.;)

got home last night and changed the air filter, not the worst I've seen but still pretty grubby

also cleaned out the scuttle panel drains behind the rubber flap by the wiper arms, full the the brim with leaf matter and highly suspect why the cars been getting damp inside if watrers been building up and dripping into the heater air intake

Also fixed my rear wiper arm which was starting to seize, 2 minutes of working it with some GT85 soon cured it, clears the screen as it should now

We've got the great great great grandchild of one of those on our drive, the Mk.III Citroen C5 with the trademark magic carpet ride provided courtesy of the third generation of electronically controlled hydropneumatic suspension. It's an absolute sweetheart of a thing to drive :)

Back on topic, today I cleaned the seals and drains for the sun roofs, during which I discovered something new about my freelander, despite owning it for 14 years, and having been all over it with a set of spanners in that time frame, I genuinely did not know about. It turns out that there is a little pink slidey button on the cross bar in between the sunroofs, only really visible after you remove the pop out panels, this pink button operates a catch that allows you to remove the crossbar, making the sunroof aperture even more "aperta".

Washed it, this car has certainly sat for a considerable time at some point judging by the amount of green moss and Algi I’ve pressure washed out of all the nooks and crannies

Just watched a youtube last night on the new Defender - check engine light on at 2 days, 167 miles, cylinder 2 and 3 mixture. Back to dealers for 2 CM updates after which the cameras failed, told it was another failed cm but back to the garage for further diag. Thats this month!!

I also got the SDD (130,supposed to be better for older stuff) - off a jag website, got it up and running in virtual box, which i also use for Elsa (VAG not disney).
Then the cable came yesterday, went for a play and virtual box wanted an update - hasn't worked since. missing dll and bios setting changed goign by the error, got the dll back, never got atthe bios yet. lol ill get there and let yous know. https://www.jaguarforum.com/showthread.php?t=108460

I've just received a clone adapter and SDD on CD/DVD, so I might need to pick your brains on how to make it work.

I'm pretty useless when it comes to computer software, preferring hardware myself.

I've got to replace my EDC, and apparently SDD will allow an EDC change, on a second hand replacement, but LR said they can only change to a new one.

Im an electronics test engineer by trade and like yourself hardware - its all about keeping the smoke in.
I have been perplexed of late when we advertise for test engineers all the CVs come in with purely software - things change and i find myself trying to keep up lol
I can bluff my way through and will see what i can do if you run into trouble - that jag link keeps things pretty simple.

I'm not sure if I should get a dedicated laptop to run SDD. I'd be really out of my depth with virtual staff.

So any help would be appreciated, I want to drive my FL2, preferably without it costing £300 for an EDC repair.

You install a program on yer computer like oracle virtual box (others available), then install in that either a pre built "environment" or install it yerself fresh. Just the same as installing say Win 7 on a computer, but yer actually installing it into the virtual environment. Or get a copy of a pre built virtual machine install with Win 7 and load that in. All other environments like xp etc are available anorl. Essentially running a computer within a computer. If the vm has web access then it needs security but you can block it from network access. Can be a bit of a fiddle to get com ports and usb talking to peripherals etc but trial and error normally fixes this.
