This afternoon the engine fault light came on. I plugged my OBDII reader (TACKlife AOBD1W) and apart from the usual suspects which I've ignored for years (Glow Plugs) I have a new one:

P02E1 Intake Air Flap Control Actuator - Performance problem.

The thing is, I have no performance issues. The car starts, accelerates and drives the same as ever.
For now, I've reset all the fault codes and the engine fault light has gone out.
I've got a couple of hundred miles round trip to do tomorrow which, touch wood, we'll manage.

The only thing 'different' that I've been doing the past couple of days is fit a new wiper motor and linkage. This entailed a lot of engine starts and stops as I'd been sent an LHD assembly and I spent an inordinate amount of time dicking around with wiper alignment, swapping parts to make it RHD, and further alignment adjustments.

That's a problem developing with the throttle body drive mechanism.
When it fails, it can fail open, closed, or anywhere in between.
If it fails open, then you'll need notice any drop in performance. However more to close the throttle plate is, the lower the performance will be.

Quick update. Intermittent low power issues on today's round trip. Gave up and limped home. Sometimes struggling to reach 30, at others 70. Auto box changing down a gear when normally it wouldn't.
Just got home and will remove throttle body for a look-see.
But could it be a split hose? There's a fair bit of oily muck on the hose below the throttle body.
 
I've got the throttle body off and I was surprised how clean it was inside; just a film of oil.
However, on opening up the back this is what I found.

Gears utterly buggered. Miracle I got home!

So, £100+ for a new throttle body or try one of those flebay repair kits for 20 odd quid?

Nope. Definitely not the repair kit as the carbon potentiometer tracks look worn, affecting throttle position feedback.

What I don't understand with these, is why the gears strip in the first place. It's not like they're taking any load, unless of course the air travelling through the TB is causing the throttle plate to flutter, which is a possibility I guess.

The metal gear kits are a good upgrade, unless of course there are other issues with the TB, like the pot or bearings, or motor.

1) The spring return on the butterfly is pretty strong. That should minimise flutter / backlash.
2) I don't think the gears are lubricated. Presumably to avoid contaminating the potentiometer tracks. Google & YouTube seem throws this up as a common 'feature' on many throttle bodies; Citroen / Audi / Ford, et al.
3) 211,000 miles may have something to do with it.

Update: New throttle body arrived this morning and fitted by lunchtime. Just back from a brief test drive.
Engine fault light cleared and engine running sweetly,

But I have a new problem. See separate thread.
 
Managed to brake in a moment of temper.:mad:

I was waiting for the local recycling lorry to move, to give me a clear road ahead. It's one of those roads where there's parking all the way down the road, making it a single carriageway with passing places.
So driving down this road, and ahead I see the recycling lorry pull out and block the road, but before he pulled out I saw a school bus coming the other way. So I pulled up a the first obstruction (a vehicle on the left) and waited patiently for the recycling lorry to move up the road so I could follow it and dive into the next gap and allow the bus to pass.
So just as I started to move, the bloke behind me in a Kia estate decides he's too important to wait so pulls pass me, forcing me to brake so I give him the LR twin tones and some swear words. :mad:
He then continued to drive up the pavement to pass the recycle lorry, before cutting in front of it and the bus and off he went being a dick.
I was then cross so planted my foot on the throttle when pulling away, during which time I managed to get the clutch rubber somehow stuck under my work boot treads, which allowed the clutch to slip momentarily before the pedal pinged up, snatching the clutch in hard at about 4k RPM. Well the engine jumped in it's mountings and then I noticed a hissing noise, which sounded like a boost leak.
So I looked on my lunch break today, and it seems that the new boost pipe I fitted in the summer has now been holed because it's made contact with AC compressor pulley.:mad: Probably because the engine moved on it's mounts more than it should do under normal driving.
So now I've got to do the whole pull the front of the car off again to change the sodding boost pipe. :mad:
I wish I had my dash cam fitted, as this moron drove up a pavement to pass the lorry, which the police around here take a very dim view of, and will often prosecute on dash cam footage alone.
Time to get the dash cam installed I think.

I've got one in storage in my workshop somewhere.
I just don't like trailing wires are permanent plugs in the power sockets, so I'm thinking of taking the power for it off the interior light supply, which is conveniently placed by the rear view mirror. The interior light supply remains live for the whole time the vehicle is powered up, and shuts down about 20 minutes after turning the vehicle off and locking the doors, so it's ideal for a dash cam.
Definitely moved up the to do list I think.

I think I may have done something similar. :eek:
Not in temper or even pushing at all but today I was driving on a twisty back road and when climbing a fairly steep hill my old C Class auto juddered and the engine warning light came on. The whole way home the gears were very sluggish to change and I don't think it went higher than 5th gear out of 7. :(
I still have to check what has happened but it is very bad timing as I have a lot of work on atm. :mad:

Must be something about this time of year that sees our cars fight us...

...My beemer had an advisory on it's MOT last year for slight play on lower X/S/F balljoint. The X is important. Not a problem, I mot'd it a couple of days before going away on a trip offshore, followed by another long deployment just after Christmas, come March, I order N/S/F balljoint and fit it, and it was an easy job. When checking the MOT date I seen the advisory was O/S/F lower balljoint, cock. So I order a new one, and book a test, went to fit it last night, broke one ball joint splitter, t'other wouldn't fit, hammering a fork into the hoor with a with a chest infection just about finished me, so I had to phone a mate to ask for help. While I had it up in the air, with undertrays removed to get room to extricate the wishbone bolt, I noticed a power steering fluid leak from the input shaft of the rack, that's a £1,300 rack or £350 exchange, and a front subframe off job. I also noticed a slight oil leek, or evidence of it, that will need investigating later. I also noticed the front tyres, which are 3 year older than the back ones, while still having about ~3-4mm tread, are showing cracking between the treads, that'll be £400 the pair to get the Michelins I like. Probably looking at a four-figure-fiasco, and that's me doing the work, and I've still the completely intermittent stability control issue to sort out. And then the 20 year old Freelander MOT's days before Christmas, wish me luck.
