I meant you should have sold the FL to your daughter lol

Ah I see. She only passed her driving test on the 20th of last month, so her insurance quote for the FL1 was £4800!!:eek:

So I paid for a Fiat 500 instead, which still costs her, well me at the moment £1000 a year to insure.

Bizarrely I insured the 1.8 for £170, as a new policy with zero claims bonus. Mad init.

When both on my kids were after their first car I tried to steer them to Freelanders.

Son said "nah" and got himself a 220 Tomcat instead, although he did then think about a Freelander before he got a Beemer.

Daughter just gave me that "are you an alien?" look :D

One of the few benefits of getting older, cheaper insurance :)

On the family cars front, my dad "gave" me a 1993 fiat Tipo that he'd had from new nearly 20 years ago. It was horrendously uncool for a 20yr old lad to drive when all my mates had GTEs, Pug 205s etc, but by the time I'd finished with it it had done 189000 miles, never broken down and didn't have to have anything done other than servicing (with the exception of a window regulator). I was quite sad to sell it on in the end.

Have you checked out Admiral multi-car for you and her. We saved a heap going that way.

@Nodge68 - Glad to hear of the successful onclusion to operation Tonga.

The rover coupes are still achingly cool cars. Never had one my self, by the time I could have had one I was into my MR2's, and now I cannot justify a tomcat, not when I have a collection of better cars than the tomcat would ever be.

Thanks.

Lovely looking cars, we loved ours. They weren't actually very strong vehicles though, as the large hole in the roof seriously affected body rigidity. If you jack up a front wheel, the body will visibly twist, causing the doors to stick, as the door aperture changed shape. We sold ours when no 1 daughter came along, replacing it with a new MG ZS180, which was a stunning vehicle to drive. I still miss that car, even though it was a love/hate relationship at the time.

Tried that. They gave us a laughable quote for her car. The insurance companies simply don't like new drivers. Her insurance for her Fiat 500 1.2 is just under £1000, but has to have a mileage limit, and a black box fitted. Any policy without a black box costs over £2000, on a car that I can insure myself for just over £100.

I remember when my daughter got her first car she was 17 and had L plates. We got a reasonable quote at the time from Compare the Market but when she passed her test we informed them and they more than doubled the price. It was cheaper for us to cancel the policy, pay the penalty and shop around for another quote than stay with them.
We probably paid a similar amount as you at the time but after a year or two it fell a lot and the multicar police became the cheapest by a huge amount as we have three cars to insure.

Edit: Be sure to add yourself and wife as named drivers on her car as this will lower the price by a lot. Also make sure to check the price around 20 days before you need it.

We're on the policy too, as it really did drop the premium, and obviously I'm going to need to drive it, so I can test it after maintenance and repairs. :D

Drove a nice long rutted byway on Dartmoor on me way to mountain biking......tad more ground clearance would've been nice at times

I also finished putting my soft A bar back on the SE auto, now I've decided to keep it.
I'm not going to put my LED light bar back on though, as I've got another plan instead.

@Nodge68 There are additional driving courses your daughter can do that reduce the premium, things like Pass PLus, Institute of Advanced Motorists etc. The latter is a really good course for any motorist, but as well as teahing road craft, and improving driving, it significantly decreases the insurance premiums of young drivers.

It is something we've looked into. However convincing No 1 daughter that more tests are good, didn't go down to well. :(
