Reasonably busy weekend of snags, including new pedal covers, trying to replace the number plate light (for an LED box), and fitting this (phone holder which replaces the TD5 ashtray).

Sharing this eBay purchase which is a simple 3D printed unit. It needed a satin black spray, then it was very simple to fit.

For £20 I've added Google maps/ Waze for my road trips!

Had to get a recovery company to start it! On trying to leave work, it wouldn’t start. The starter was clicking when I tried to start it but no amount of playing with the wiring would get it going. The recovery guy had a go and managed to get it going. He said the wiring to the starter needs checking so I’ll look at the earths too. Gone to start it this morning and no change so I’m on the bike to work.:rolleyes:o_O I haven’t even told Mrs K yet…

Big week.

Just collected the truck after a series of upgrades/ fixes.
  • Stage 2 Remap (Alive)
  • High flow air filter
  • New hoses
  • Ultimate Intercooler added
  • Powder coated braces in front of intercooler
  • Replaced injector loom
  • Fixed oil leak that got into wiring loom
  • Replaced temperature sensor
Completed a brief journey (5 miles): Early results: (I) The transition from 1st > 2nd is much smoother, (II) the torque keeps on going. All of the interior rattles are now much louder!

Will report back after a longer journey

I've discovered the cause of my Gremlins with my lights.

Looks like I need to replace the Glass Fuse Holders with some Blade Fuse Holders

Only issue is that I don't have the ratings sheet on the back of the fuse panel cover. Instead I have some white sticky labels and the writing is that faded I can't make it out. I seem to have a lot of 25A fuses and I'm guessing they might be a bit higher than what should be there.

If anyone has a Pic of what they should be or can point me in the direction of where to find the info, that'd be great. It's a 1989 90 2.5TDI

Cheers

When I get home Friday I will have a look. Mines an 85 with glass fuses & wiring would be the same size.
(Remind me if you don’t get photos)

Thanks again for all the help.

I need to swap them out for sure. After sorting the issues earlier this morning I went out to give it a run and low and behold the Indicators decided not to work this time, opened it all up again, wiggled it about a bit and they came back.

Definitely some dodgy connections on the fuse boards. Will need to start pulling fuses to see what is what so I can label everything up.

Says it fits tdi defenders- may be for a later fuse box.

I'll be doing a bit on my 1988 90 tomorrow, I'll try to remember a piccy.
Thanks,

I did look but I don't have 20 fuses in holders behind the panel.

I have 2 sets of 7 and 2 in another

I'll have to pull them to see what I lose, so I know what's what and then hopefully cross ref so I can match the values

Its the sticker thats in the 300tdi's fuse box which identify the values of the fuses .... The OP said "I seem to have a lot of 25A fuses and I'm guessing they might be a bit higher than what should be there.

The label I linked to shows the value they should be for the items they are protecting. .... like the headlights are 7.5A per filament, the hazards are 15 and the Aux circuit (inc the interior lights, horn, instruments and indicators) are on a 20A
The glass fuses are nothing but problems ... my S3 had them, if the OP is going to swap them for blades then these are the values to protect the circuits ...

Replaced the rear indicators this evening, and rather shockingly, I discovered a lot of compacted mud/sand behind both of the lights (clearly coming from the rear wheel arches), and caking the rear cross member.

I cleaned out what I could - but now looking forward to getting the Gwyn Lewis mud guards fitter.

Yes, mine picks up plenty of dirt inside these rear cavities too. Interestingly enough, it stays moist even in long periods of dry weather. Periodically I unscrew my lights, put the pressure washer nozzle in there, let it dry for a few days and then refresh the Dinitrol.

Thanks, just gotta start pulling fuses now to see if someone decided to move things about a bit just for Sh*ts & Giggles

Interesting. I had thought of putting the pressure washer nozzle in there (but was worried I might damage the electrics). I'll give this a go.

Hosing them out never seemed to do any harm, and shifts more dirt than you can reach through the holes with your fingers. I've had wiring loom problems, but they were more to do with the deterioration of the wiring looms themselves, and tended to be in the bulkhead or engine area rather than anything to do with my reliance on the pressure washer.
