More bits arrived.... New pads all round, rear discs, new steering damper, steering bar, front brake calliper pin rubbers all to be fitted... Still no where near ready for MOT.

Did you get an upgraded steering dampner Tilly2? The front end steering stuff is on my list of to do's and wondering what sort of difference it will make

Nah, just a cheapo Britpart. Its what Craddocks had on the shelf. My old one has more holes in it than a swiss cheese....

Filled it up with toffee and chocs

An afternoon of poking around, and here's what I've found.
1. Despite some concerns, there's no sign of leaking around the power steering pump, other than the coolant I already know about (new top hose on the way as bleed plug is just shot), and general oil all over the engine bay

2. However, possible (/probable) signs around the steering box. What do you reckon from these? My power steering fluid had dropped, but I can't say for sure since when, and in the 100 miles since I topped it up it doesn't seem to still be dropping... so far. It does look like there's something leaking onto it from higher up - but of course its entirely possible that it's both.
Also
- purely in terms of the work of doing the job, not parts, how much of a pain is swapping the box? Better than doing the pump?

3. No picture, but suspect drive shaft seal has failed. There's a leak down one wheel, but gaiter looks to be in good condition all around, and brake hoses (all new last year anyway) also look good. Nothing else it could be?

4. What a blinkin' pain getting that glow plug connector back on was! No idea why it had come off, though

Drive seals not a big issue to do, Ive done one side, but need to do the other, as its leaking oil all over the tyre...... Buy genuine seal though.

I replaced my steering box output seal with the pump in situ. Bit of a biatch to get the arm off, but I bought a tool set for that. Clean up the area with brake cleaner, and dry off. Its then easier to locate where the source of the leak is....

Welp...after picking up a 2002 Disco TD5 last week I've become Mr Paddock's best mate and our local Viking postie's worst enemy due to the amount of spares I've had to order.

Today I bodged a repair to the brake servo after scarily finding I had a solid brake pedal and little to no brakes when pulling into the local shop...the former owner had broken the spigot off the non return valve on the servo unit and then rather than buying a second hand vacuum pipe and non return valve, just glued the broken one back on. It decided to part company with the glue leaving me with no servo assist just when I needed it. Luckily...up here in the frozen north, if I see more than 2 cars whilst heading down the 4 miles of single track road to the shop,it's either because someone has died or the ferry has just come in.

Whilst waiting for a replacement to arrive, I hacked up a repair using a bit of 7mm copper brake pipe and some instant gasket...works fine now :)

Don't you just love previous owners, who don't give a monkeys....
Aye...my Disco's previous owner isn't going to be on my Xmas card list any time soon either. I spent an hour with a 9lb sledge hammer and a block of wood beating the rear wheels off the hubs today just to change the disks and pads. Alloy wheels and steel hubs never mix well unless you fire at least a smidgin of copperslip on the hub occasionally

Judging by the state of the disks, non existent pads and seized calipers, the back wheels haven't been off in years...

Well, Ive finally got another weekend to myself, so its more replacing parts, and hopefully dropping the tank, so I can inspect the rear chassis holes. I think my lad wants me to do some work on his 90, but he can sod off, its my Discos time for some attention.... New rear discs and pads, calliper rubbers, front n/s oil seal on the diff, and replace the shocks on the back as well... Lots of chassis welding to do, as there are still a few holes that need a patch.

Plate made up for the hole on the front n/s, weld through primed for tomorrow.... Whilst replacing the front driveshaft seal, found that the swivel joint at the bottom was fubared... Removed everything, but realised I'd lent out my removal clamp set to a mate... Tried to wollop them out but quickly realised thats not going to happen.... Looks like its just welding tomorrow. At least I got the new drop link fitted.

Dose of vactan, then brew time.... Finally two coats of stone chip. That will keep the mot man happy.

Very nice job indeed.

I couldn't get mine into the garage to do anything today...wind was in the wrong direction. That may seem strange, but up here with winter storms every couple of days, I can't get the big garage doors open when it's blowing a north easter...or if I did, I wouldn't be able to close them again until the wind dropped below 30mph or changed direction. With big tides and high-ish winds (gusting to a mild 45mph today), the headland on our part of the island is taking it's usual seasonal battering.

The pitfalls of living somewhere most other people don't :)
