Took off my knacked viscus fan to improve the heating and low running temperature...the difference is amazing, not only do I now have warm toes but the Disc know seems to run better, possibly due to not beng so cold...I feel a cooling system service coming on before spring!
The viscous fan is designed to "free wheel" until the viscous unit gets up to temperature at which point it locks and the fan spins at the engine speed.
If it had stuck locked then yes, it would slow down the time the engine takes to reach its normal operating temperature, also there is a small "horsepower cost" to running the fan which is probably why you seem to feel a slightly better performance by removing it.
One problem which you might encounter, seeing as you're based somewhere near Wimbledon/Clapham/Balham/Putney/Wandsworff is running your vehicle in congested town traffic which is where the viscous fan really comes into its own.
By the time the dashboard temperature gauge starts showing overheating the damage has probably been done.
Yep, I intend to give the cooling system a full drain and replace the thermostat, in the meantime I have a new viscous fan on order. If a city dweller then better to go leccy fan, saves the fuel and keeps it cool as and when necessary. Not ideal for intercooled engines as they rely on air being drawn through the intercooler by the steady speed of even a freewheeling fan.
Thermostats stuck open are usual cause of cold cabins, the coolant circulates the head, block and heater matrix happily and only when the stat opens does it full bore to the radiator for heat exchange.

Put it in for service and MoT and it .......
Bloody Failed!
The failure was for "Nearside Front Lower Suspension arm ball joint dust cover excessively deteriorated so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (2.4.G.2)".
I was aware of the possibility and had discussed this with the garage back last August and between us we decided that pulling down the entire nearside suspension just for a rubber boot was a bit over the top so apparently they've been able to do a repair to the boot and seal the ball joint up again. As we both agreed when we spoke that it would be a complete nightmare, especially if it was just the boot and there was no reason to replace the ball joint.
I'll get the car back on the morrow, all legal again for another year.
oh mate , gutted for u , hope tommorow goes better
Thanks Gary. Between us, the garage and me, we decided that if we had to pull the entire front suspension down on one side for whatever reason, it would be best to do both sides at the same time. Such is the extent of that job, you don't want to be doing it more than once in a lifetime so if ever we had to do it we'd do the front CV joints as well while we had access. The parts would be cheap enough, but I don't have the facilities or the specialist press tools. Breaking a ball joint is easy enough, but pressing the damned things out of the suspension arms ..... well that's different kettle of fish altogether.
But since we don't have to, we won't do it. So it looks like I got away with a split type stick-on replacement boot and a fill with grease ....... result! Even so, I'm still expecting him to take 300 plus quid from in my pocket for all the work, although it's the bloody VAT that tends to sting a bit.
You know when you've got a fairly good vehicle when the garage mechanics start offering you money for it. Either that or he doesn't pay them enough to buy anything else!
