With some filters, I retain and re-use the old O ring as a lot that are supplied with the filters, not justInvestigated a new oil leak on the fip side of the block, p38 diesel.
Leaking from the top of the plastic oil filter lid, there's a large O ring there and removing it showed no damage anywhere, britpart filter but I've not had an issue using them before. Got another filter, different make, and the O ring with that was noticeably thicker in section, renewed that and all appears well again. Scary clatter for a few seconds though which I've never had before.

I'd part out the L322 the 3,6 is a POS IMHO.Some positive posts gents, I can see its down to me to bring us back on familiar range rover ground....

It appears there is a fairly good possibility there are combustion gases in the coolant

Let's recap -
1/ head gaskets suspect. Sniff test as above and system pressurises quickly after starting. May explain the white smoke under load when cold. Could be unburnt fuel though
2/ Cam cover gaskets both shot, leaking enough to cover downpipes and cause lovely hot oil smell. Main reason I stopped driving it
3/ thermostat housing is more than likely leaking
4/ Possible suspect turbo, I've got 1 oily MAP sensor and this fault code logged

(Tame indy said not to worry about the fuel vol/oil temp ones. We already knew about the a/c fan being fubar- seized fan motor)
5/MOT up in March '24. It needs 4 tyres ideally and rear hub bushes doing at a minimum
6/ Couple of little niggles, drivers heated seat, parking sensors etc
So after a long and informative chat with me friendly indy, (he didn't charge a penny to sniff test and plug in diagnostics or to give advice for a full hour) I'm looking at engine and box out for HG's. So you do the 2 turbos on one of these while you're in there don't you. Timings gotta come off so you do chains etc. Cam cover gaskets, you replace the covers don't you. Head(s) might be warped...gearbox feels a bit tired even after full service so do you get reconned?
Getting a bit silly isn't it. Β£4000 bill? Maybe more. On a 2006 with 170k on it.
Put a bottle of steel seal in it, do the gaskets and sell it on? That aint me

95k miles, same family since 2005. Recon ashcroft box and lof hd clutch. Avon AT tyres all round with powdercoated alloys. Standard engine and exhaust, bilt hamber underseal yearly with proof. Ring binder FULL of history. A gem

D2 looks smart, they're a nice motor especially stock motors without comedy tyres or those hideous metal offroad bumpers.
I've seen a few 3.6's now with HG failure all higher mileage motors over 160k generally, 9 so far and only 1 got the go ahead for repair, the rest were cubed, L332's have got to the point where Β£4000 + is not really viable, espeically if the car is tired and in need of a few thousand in other areas, to be honest if i were in your position i'd of gone for a D2 aswell.Was hoping you'd pop up geezer

I've had a d2 before, mostly stock i love em. Held out and struck on this one soon as it came up, knew it was the one.
+1 big tyres, 4inch lift etc just not my bag. It will probably get a mild remap for towing the wobble box

Good insight, bit of a shame its got some good recent bits on it. Front air springs, hpfp, subframe bushes etc all done 2016/17. And a nice one you snagged up to, a rarity nowadays, seldom ever see a clean D2.
