Got the starter off, it's tight but not too difficult a job. I'm hoping this is the problem as it looks dodgy. How can I test?
It's a magnetti marelli off a 5series scrapper. Also found 2 rogue 10mm nuts and a 15mm snap on bit trapped between starter and crank sensor :rolleyes:

Presume any M51 (DT/DSE/BMW) unit is compatible?
 
I did nowt to her today, just used for a shopping trip, 30 miles round trip, NO FUNNY NOISES :eek::eek::eek::D:D:D
This after a rather longer trip last Friday, around 90 miles round trip, noises started after 1/2 hour and then stopped after half a minute and that was it, no further problems.
I think I may have sorted it at last, will have to wait and see. The last thing I did was remove all brake pads, wire brush pads and calipers, spray with brake cleaner, grease back of pads with copper coat and replace. Maybe one of the pads had been rubbing now and then.
All other work was needed anyway in long term, replaced all prop UJ's, stripped and cleaned hand brake, replaced defective VCU.

Lost traction from the backwheels on a roundabout and ended up going over the wall into the flowerbed in the middle. No damage to the car or myself, but not a pleasant experience (I've only been driving a year, so this was my first 'accident')

I put it down to a combination of:
  • Rain
  • Grabber AT's on the back (new wheels came with these on)
  • Car tilting to the left (EAS ECU needs calibrating)
  • Tyre inflation (left was under, right was over)
So completely my own fault, lesson learned to pay more attention to my wheels and I think I'll be getting rid of the grabbers for something more suited to consistent road use
 
No, clear space all round and all are firmly fixed with no fractures/cracks.
I always take caliper bolts (with rubber boots) off and clean/regrease them while I am there (with regular grease) They can gum up and stick. Locktite them up

I have MT's. Cooper ST's on back that are as good as AT's on road,

insta turbos on front do not like wet Tarmac at all! When it snows or gets muddy you can feel the tyres start gripping better. When wet wet they start to slip. You just slow it down a little and adjust your gear/driving to the conditions

I have AT2s all round with no grip issues. Never had them slip. Oil on road? Black-ice?
Can't see it being tyres, unless you push them to the limit, ie drive it like you stole it :D
RR's have phenomenal grip even with bald tyres, although we are used to driving in all conditions with RWD vehicles. For example I once drove my defender around for a week without a clutch with no crashes or problems. I would NOT advise this to anyone, particularly less experienced drivers.

If you made a mistake as you said, that's okay - everyone does. But pay attention to it's lesson and don't be afraid to admit it. ;)
If the vehicle is doing it - GET IT SEEN BY A PROFESSIONAL.
Next time it may be a person instead of a plant pot :eek:
 
Before I scrapped my old Hilux (chassis was gone plus old leaf springs) it always would try to lose the back end on one particular roundabout. Only ever that roundabout - not even my M3 in snow was bothered by it :confused:
Never caught me out because I knew it would do it. Forewarned is forearmed ;)
 
With my Rover

Hilux, bizarre vehicles, mine was only happy on the road if it had 3/4 ton in the back. Then handled like a dream, otherwise bounced around like a rabbit on speed..!!
 
They are s**t offroad too. Spin too fast with not enough torque even in low. Independent suspension crossed with leafs, joking 4wd, very heavy all on front even with double cab. They can take a battering and quite comfy but nothing on a landy

After sorting the suspension and tyre inflation out it's fine now, just making me a bit more careful when going round roundabouts :)
Could it have been diesel on the road, there are a few roundabouts near me that are lethal in the rain, close to LGV yards, the vehicles leave the yards with tanks full to the brim and it spills all over the road.

I don't think so, all were loose enough I thought.
However,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, fecking noise came back today after a round trip of just 3 miles :mad::mad::mad::mad:
BUT it came on just as I was getting home so parked up as normal. Of course it stopped when we came to a stop, good opportunity in the morning to get the rear right hand wheel off and have a good look at the brake pads, the rubbing grinding noise did seem to come from the right rear.
