Actually drove it to go shopping, its being used a bit more at the moment as the newer cheaper to run daily snapped its timing chain on the M3, that was not fun at all with the car sitting in the live lane of the smart motorway till highway towed it to refuge bring back the hard shoulder:mad:
and i thought bmw timing chains were bullet proof,
engines out and hopefully go back in Thursday once ive finished fixing it:(

Bmw timing chains are not bullet proof..But you unfortunately found out the hard way...commonly the more performance motors can stretch/snap them especially with high miles..S62 and variants had timing chain issues and more commonly the guides and tensioners get neglected then it’s only a matter of time before things get to clanking..

Older ones definitely have more robust chains my M30 with over 200k barely had any slack in it..

Good luck getting the ///M back up and running...

The M51 in my P38 definitely has chain stretch. I think they are supposed to be changed every 100k miles. Mine's over 150k miles and still going but one day I am going to have to get around to it.

My daily driver is I think coming up to 137K miles, the modulation is still only just over 50%. I like to think that the use of good quality synthetic engine oil helps.

The M51 in my P38 definitely has chain stretch. I think they are supposed to be changed every 100k miles. Mine's over 150k miles and still going but one day I am going to have to get around to it.
I have put over 100k on mine since getting it, when I got my FIP sorted they checked the chain and it was fine, because I assumed it'd need changing so asked for it to be done while doing the FIP.

How did they check it? Modulation? Or peek through the hole and that looks OK?
 
Ordered a rear seal for my transfer box. The one fitted by Ashcrofts didn't cut the mustard and neither did the Corteco one I fitted so sod it, I'll go original.

Talking to the Main Stealer and it appears that although my car was built in 1995 it is built to a 1996 specification. So, whatever changed between 1995 and 1996 I got the '96 spec. Wonder what changed?!
 
Filled the bus with petrol (£76 for just over half a ruddy tank) and a bottle of Redex.
Then added all my camping and triking gear for a weekend away at the British Human Powered Club gathering at Mildenhall.
Reset the MPG counter and hoping to see the usual 20.x + on the M-way drive.
Drinks may be consumed at some stages, but not while driving. :D

started her back up and checked for leaks!

can't get over how quiet and smooth she is!
