Yeah I was absoloutely gob smacked when I saw the quoted prices, then I googled the Bosch number on the old one (0330001015) and it seems they are used on all sorts of manuf's cars, and much much cheaper than pricing up with the Land Rover part number.

It's always the way. GTA uses the same Bosch Maf as the smaller engined models and many Vauxhalls but is twice the price. Once you have the bosch number it's easier to find :rolleyes:. Not surprised LR do the same.
 
Had a look at the starting problem on Buttercup.
First off getting 12 + volts at glowplugs so that's OK. Tried the meter on the feed to the stop solenoid, 12+ volts. Cracked the banjo bolt on the fuel filter and gave the lift pump a pump or two, diesel being forced out quite nicely. Looks like the stop solenoid then.
After cutting a lump off an old spanner managed to get the little sod out, flashed 12 v across it and nothing. Took the one off the spare engine I have, tried that and that dosn't work either:mad::(:mad::(:mad:, I guess the engine last ran about 5 years ago so perhaps to be expected.
Paddocks have one (maybe) for next to £150,:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: just got one by searching the Bosch number for £51 delivered tomorrow with luck.
12+ volts at the glow plugs? Sounds like they are all open circuit, I wouldn't expect to see much more than 10 volts at the glowplugs with a fully charged battery, they pull a lot of current causing a substantial volt drop in the feed.

Hmmmm, thats made me think a bit - difficult for me as I'm a total leccy dumbo - what I actually did was set my mulimeter to DC Volts, clipped the black lead to a known good earth, clipped the red lead to the little nut on the end of glowplug nearest the bulkhead, turned ig on. Meter recorded 12.2 - 12.3 volts steady until relay/timer clicked, at that point all current zero'd. From this I prooved the glow relay/timer was working normally, I assumed the glowplugs were OK, Sunday she started as normal, Monday evening a slight reluctance to fire but only about a second, Tuesday evening absolutely dead. Starter spinning as normal, ie quite quickly.
If it makes any difference I have a dual battery system.
 
Third day in a row with a half dead battery. Covered all usual voltage leak suspects and now looking like battery on way out, after standing for a year after last year's engine work . And.. now getting tricky to start with a low fuel tank, (anything less than a 1/4 tank .).. ###k me.. does it ever end!!?

No Hahahahahaha. Mine doesn't!
 
Swapped over top and middle o-rings (rubber gaskets?) in the FIP. Lovely job. I scribed it and then found that I'd scribed the wrong bit. Finally got it though. Really enjoyed the fractions of a turn and revs up... back it off, back to the other corner... tighten, revs down, back to the other corner....
Test drive now and hope that those bottom o-rings aren't leaking....

I do not know your engine, but many diesels will start with dead glowplugs if it's not too cold.
If your meter has an ohms setting, take the cable off one glowplug and with the meter set to 200 ohms or less put one probe on the part of the glow plug you took the cable off and the other probe on a good earth. It should read close to zero. One other thing to check is the earth from the engine block to chassis.
 
Does it count if it was yesterday?
Did the pump head oring.
Bone dry pump!
New plugs and new intank pump. Starts up like a fire engine! Drives like a boat?!:D

Right then, put the dial of my meter onto the upside down horseshoe bit, on 200k, glow 4 (bulkhead) reads 0.4, glows 3 and 2 read 1.00, can't get at number one very easily so no check on that one. With the meter on 2m it reads 0.00 on number 4, reads 1.00 on 3 and 2.
Looks like I'm into changing the glowplugs then.

New fuel shut off valve arrived today, fitted and attempted to start, coughed a couple of times but still wont start. This in itself is an improvement.:)
Swapped numbers 2 and 3 glow plugs for good old ones, fired up straight away. Happy bunny.:):):)
So I shall now order a new set of glow plugs, ready. The 2 that were faulty had been in there about 10k Km, fitted last year. I thought I was buying a decent part when I bought Beru. Crap. Worse than Sh*tpart.

The meter should be on 200 ohms, not 200K ohms or 2M. the resistance of the glow plugs is near zero cold so the 200,000 range or the 2,000,000 range will tell you nothing.
 
Had to breath a si of relief this afternoon, after doing some remote land management came back to the beast and for some reason engine immobilised press remote and the associated beeping met me. Pressed remote no luck, got out locked it up and tried the key code no success. Muttering and cursing under my breath so the green oval gods could not hear scrambled into the back for the trusty adjustable as I thought id disconnect the battery and start over. Thought just one more try of the code first and just as I was entering the last part I heard all the door locks fire. Deep breath got in and tried and no problems away she went. No idea why it immobilised but just glad I keep a copy of the code inside as I was miles from anywhere.

Door latch micro switches can cause that, mine has started doing it occasionally, if I lock & unlock a couple of times it's OK. I have all the security stuff turned off, so it may be easier with mine.

Big apology time, the glows wern't Beru sorry, they were Delphi.
Just ordered a set of 4 Bosch glowplugs via amazon Germany at just short of £40 delivered, hope they last a bit longer when I come to fit them.

Delphi are usually good, I don't know about Bosch, I stick to NGK or Beru.

Just make sure that the power to the glows is switching off when the car starts.
 
Put it on the drive so I can take the wheels of and my son can get new tyres put on only to find that when he changed a wheel over on it a while back the locking nut key got missed placed, so now we up the creek and I am a little peeded oft as it always lives in the glove box:mad: and I don't know what letter key it should be.
