So initial thoughts were not expensive to repair....but they've investigated the subframe mounting points further and ....

Erm no thanks - soon to be on eBay as spares! Land Rover?? Think I'll opt for another brand that has chassis that can last 16+ years and more than 134k miles! I'm amazed that a car costing £60k+ is scrap in under 20 years. Unless of course the previous owners parked it in the sea every night?

Yeah would help to know a location I've a mate who is a welder and fabricator can save any motor. The rest is just consumerbles

I'd explore the notion of paying for another MOT at another place, does the tester perhaps fancy getting his mitts on your wagon at a knock down price by over egging the rot from "serious but not critical surface rust" to "gaping big oles".........until I see the photos my mind will default to conspiracy and outright slander.:eek:

Subframe mounting prescribed areais excessively corroded offside rear inner and outer sill. There's rust under there but this is all I can see that's been chipped away

If, out of the blue, your doctor is adamant that your mildly smelly but normal looking and functional feet actually require amputating, do you accept his diagnosis without fuss and immediately sell all your footwear on ebay and cancel the North Face expedition,,,,,,?
 
Wait a minute, that looks like a jacking point?
A crumbly jacking point that's ascended into a crusty sill, a far less expensive fix than sub frame mounts.
 
If terminal corrosion is within 300mm of any suspension mounting point it is a fail, I'd like to believe the actual sub mount is presentable, but you are looking at maybe £500 notes to sort the sill ends properly.

That's the only well rotted metal I can see- granted there is a fair bit of rust around the subframe but the mounting points don't look bad. The garage presented a small bag of broken rusty metal which appears to come from the jacking point. Like I said I'm no expert so I've got a mobile welder who drives a Defender to have a look see and report back tomorrow. Hopefully it's doable as I do like the old piece of turd!
 
That a feck of a lot of rust compared to my P38!

Isn't the body only held on by about a dozen bolts?
 
Well, if your mate can weld I'm sure it can be done cheapish;)

MOT testers putting rust in little bags, that's rum and a bit 'he protesteth too much' tbh, he probably has loads lying around from Disco's!:rolleyes:
 
So a mobile welder has paid a visit. No yellow markings on the rot from the MOT test station and he says I've had a harsh test. About £300 max to repair but he's not convinced it's a failure? Might just get it retested to see what happens
 
Took the front spot lights off not to my taste.
Ended up putting 2 cheep led things to the light bar on there because previous owner had drilled through the bumper and I didnt want to be left with holes in the bumper

Why oh why do people insist on putting round lights on what is essentially a square car. look at the l322, its obvious that the tail lights should be square, BUT NO some clever bugger thought(pardon the pun) we will put round lights in there
