Maybe it was an aftermarket one put in by previous owner(s) ? It was like this:

The broken one in the car is Audi. That picture was what mine was like when I bought it, although Keith's sounds different. I've never seen one with metal flange for the pipes, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. @Datatek I suspect you got lucky if there's no plastic to break on yours !!

Mine were metal flange and all the videos I've seen have metal flanges

Some confusion here I think, my heater matrixes are original P38.

It wasn't meant to be a P38 one. All the P38 cores I can find online have a plastic header & pipe joints. The bracket on the pipes is aluminium.

This picture comes from the Technical Archive above. My old matrix was exactly like this, but had cracked in between the inlet & outlet and would not seal.

Pre heater didn't stay running this morning! Had to sit with the engine running while the screen defrosted.
Pre heater must have only run 5 mins the screen only had peep holes at the bottom.
Battery was fully charged and it worked just fine the other day, same ambient temp

Your 3 litre lump does have a CAT though. My P38 with electric cooling warms up very quickly, no need for a FBH.
Yes but you still have to be sat in it waiting instead of chatting on here with a nice cuppa.

Pro's - chilling out with a brew
Con's - A little polution

Which one would you choose 🤔

I start the P38 5 minutes before driving off in winter, by the time I get back to it, the windshield has melted enough for a quick scrape and the cabin is receiving heat. I can only guess which causes the most pollution, but going to the boatyard in winter, I could always tell by the smell when a FBH was running, often by the smoke as well.

If I tried doing that the car would get nicked or I would be done for leaving an unattended vehicle running, or both.
