Lovely machine. Must admit my 4.2 definitely thirsty but amazing cruiser. Got mine booked in for new thermostat as it over cools and new rubber hose that runs in the V below supercharger. Not leaking but can garantee it would when on motorway or something with family in car, don’t fancy being at hard shoulder with a 3 year old for hours waiting on Rac.

On my 4.0 Jag there's 2 solenoids that control how much water goes to the rad or the passenger / driver side of the climate control. The rubber seals fail allowing water ibto yhe solenoid which stops it moving properly. No idea if the Rangie is the same but it may not be the thermostat itself. Incidentally, the plastic thermostat housing on the Jag is a PITA and has an aluminium after-market kit available that is very good.

Hmm diag can force a regen. Maybe i should do that. It will either cook and regen, or it will fail, or maybe it will say pass but not do anything?
I've never been aware of it doing one while driving but i think i should know if it's stationary?

I wouldn't worry about it. The Fords need 5 or 10 miles before they regen and then if you boot it it kicks in. It may not do it if it doesn't think it is worthwhile because it will just be burning fuel for fun.

Havent ever noticed any diff while drive if/when it doing a regen.

You can ask it do a regen but you still have to take it for a drive for it to kick in and actually do it, I think.

The one on this 4.2sc looks to be a metal housing and traditional thermostat, oddly when you buy even a genuine stat it arrives in bits, IKEA version of a traditional stat, every one iv had has always been pre built.

No idea about solenoids but it behaves like every dodgy stat iv ever had, warms up quick stop start or town driving holds temperature, unless you put heater on full hot, give it bootfull joining motorway and it holds temperature but then settle into a cruise or coast down hill temperature starts to drop.

Hose under the V seems common leak point weep point especially warm climates, silly idea using rubber in hottest part of engine. Normally would chance it but can’t risk a leak there say on motorway with family in car, no RAC man would be able to bodge that to get it moving again.

Just had to drive my sons 4.2 super charged sport back from Aylesbury by God it do go like stink but the steering has a bit off play so its a bit sloppy dead center making it not so nice down narrow roads in the dark.

I really want to drive a 5.0 and see how much quicker they are,
I do keep looking at changing the charger pully and getting it mapped one day its a good idea next il just leave it alone 🤣

I would hate to think what a more powerful would be like, what i was not used to mine being a manual box was the sort of delay when you put your foot down as it thinks about it drops a gear or two then takes off like a scolded cat at which point its ow bugger less throttle needed, but that supercharger sound track is so nice :vb-biggrin:

Yeah it starts to accelerate in whatever gear it in on the torque then goes if i drop a gear or a few i can shift, if you do it at 40 45mph from coasting in 5th or 6th and click the kickdown it'll throw right back too 2nd and land at 4500rpm and mke all the nice noises and squat 🤣
Its very different to tow with as you feel it lock in or 'short shift' gears differently i expected it to be quite revvy towing, 2nd gear it holds a bit longer towing but the rest it still keeps it 2-3k revs,
My pal actually went from an ml27cdi to an ml500 just after i got this and is away to get an ml55amg so il be keen to see what thats like

Wish I'd held out for a 4.2 sometimes, **** the fuel bill
Sometimes i do think a 3.6 would have been more sensible, i did look but then before i knew it i was looking at 10k motors 😅
I didn't pay much for mine with 9 days mot so even if it blew up on the way home or failed an mot badly or was crippiling too run id have not been out of pocket,
I do think sometimes i should have kept my td6 as a plodder or something but it would never get used,
My 318i i bought just after the supercharged with intention to run a bit and not use the RR all the tine has done 18miles in 8months 🤣

i honestly though my 4.4 tdv8 would be much more economical than the 4.0 v8 in the p38
how wrong i was :homer:

I'm averaging 22 on the trip computer, when you take the tax and maintenance costs into consideration it'd be about 300 quid a year more to run a 4.2 for me. Pennies over 12 months 🤦🏻‍♂️
My average trip shows around 28, but it's about 20% over optimistic
I'd get 20-22 (real) from the ancient 4.0 petrol without trying to hard

Look at it, who cares how much juice it needs :vb-banana:

Cleaned for mot ( equivalent) tomorrow.
