And presumably if you pull the relay and it all drops evenly there is a leak / failure at the solenoid block for the exhaust (or backflow through a worn compressor)? Or do I mis-understand the system?

Yes, usually on the tank feed line where it goes over the exhaust at the back or the dryer.
 
No,if they were meant to be there they would have been factory fitted. Sort the problem don't mask it.
Folk fit them Alan/Kermie as an emergency aid. It allows you to pump the suspension back up if it goes on you when out and about and at least allows you to carry on driving home or to a garage which WONT be able to fix it as they WONT carry the bits.

Just a suggestion as i have read on here loads who have fitted them as a safety out of the **** aid that's all. I would much rather be able to carry on than wait for a tow truck.
One thing i learnt quickly about P38 ownership is never leave home without a jump start pack/compressor and some spare fluids and belts safely stowed in the boot area. LOL
 
Having some time at my hand, I thought I'd tackle the wiring. Also, because the emergency flash lights didn't work and I wanted to sort this before the MOT / TÜV in July.

Success: got rid of the second light switch. It switched on the lights when it was turned of, but not if the cables were disconnected. Funny. Replacing the steering column flasher switch sorted that problem, yet another of the mystery switches gone! Another one is connected to the aftermarket transistor ignition, no idea what it does but I guess I'll leave it in.

Still mysterious: The standing light switched on the right front flasher, the right hand standing light didn't work. Now the fright hand standing light is working, but the flasher is always flashing left (off and left) or right (flashing right). Emergency flasher still not working. I remember that she had the same problem after the inner wings were replaced. If i could just remember how I sorted it last time...

Ah, and the inner wings catch a **** load of mud behind the lights!
 
Why would a leak in tank feed line cause the car to drop, surely the valves will be closed and isolated that bit?

You'd think so but it doesn't seem to work that way. MrGorsky's dropped when his was holed. Discovered after he borrowed my pressure guage.

The only time mine has let me down was when the viscous fan gave up the ghost,a bit of fencing wire from the side of a field locked the fan to the coupling got me back.;) Good maintenance or good luck??:D
