Hi all Got a water leak in the timing case of my 90 which has a disco 200tdi in it.

Believe there is a seal or core plug behind the timing cover back plate, any ideas or knowledge here would be welcome.

Got a pin in the diesel pump.

Got the timing belt off the bottom pulley off etc.
got water pump off
Got outer timing belt cover off
got timing belt off

Now been stuck at the diesel pump for a while. Keep looking at it...

Have cracked off the big nut but how do i get the pulley off without messing up the pump timing.

Can i undo the three bolts on the pulley and then just remove the pulley ?, will i need a puller ?

Have ordered the diesel pump timing kit off the bay,

What bits am i likely to need gaskets obviously, probably a new water pump is it a core plug or seals behind the backplate. ?
would like to get them ordered pre lockdown as the l200 is getting some off road use and the weather and ground is getting wetter here in bog land, and she ain't no landy off road, and the pheasants have gotta be fed..

All help and advise greatly appreciated.

Inj pump just remove three small 10mm headed bolts through pulley and withdraw inj pump through the back of the timing chest, easy job, dont undo the big nut or if you have put it back asap, the pulley hub is on a large taper so you should be lucky and just do the nut back up.

As for water leak, not sure, but them three bolts top side of engine passenger side would be my suspect area, could also be timing chest cover cracked where the pump bolts up, easy to put to long a bolt in one of the holes as all different bloody lengths.

thanks guys, my timing belt kit is on the way will crack on when i have that, have a dodgy bolt in the inj pump hole at moment.

Thanks for the pic @Flossie bet that is what has gone, water pours out bottom hole in timing belt case when the engine is running and continues for a min or 2 after switch off.

Someone told me there was a rubber seal back there as well.

Will keep you all posted.

Std timing belt kit wont come with the timing chest to engine block gasket.
They come with two timing chest cover gaskets, 1 for disco 200 and other for def 200 version.

PS as yours is a disco version you also need an extra idler pulley that the def engine does not have.

Hi All

sorry for the confusion waiting on this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Big-Red-...ng-Kit-for-Diesel-Engines-SWE145/321984610886

Belt has only done 3k miles so was planning on refitting that.

Will then attack the pump and see if i can get the timing back plate off.

Then will see what that reveals.

Just to add that kit will do the timing just fine, but if you need to remove the crankshaft cam belt pulley, which you will need to if removing timing chest case, you will need some longer bolts, M5 i think three of, sorry cannot remember length.

Thanks for that

hopefully the farm stores will proivide they have a well stocked bolt rack...lol

So quick update

Got done work early and in a brave mood tackled the diesel pump

Thanks to all on here for the advice, did up the big nut on pump undid the 3 and hey presto it all went loose, had to fiddle about to get the pulley over the pump locking pin but got that all apart loosened pump mounting bolts and went for the rest of it.

struggled to release then timing cover backplate felt it was pinching low down, eventually sussed that three sump bolts go in the bottom of it....DOH..! Came off easy after that

pictures on where we are now.

Good news core plug intact and doesn't look like it has been leaking..

Bad news where is the water pouring from, only occurs when running and directly after switch off for a few mins.

Have enclosed pics of block and timing case.

only thing i can think of is a gasket or water pump.

Have ordered new gaskets for all surfaces and a new water pump.

So good clean and refit when the bits arrive, unless any of you wonderful folk have a better idea..

Did you order the new belt?

If you think logically, which will be difficult as you own a land rover:D
The coolant can only really come from two places, 1 the gaskets them three long bolts pass through, or 2 the back of the timing belt cover where the water pump bolts on

Just studying the pics and it looks to me like 2 of them three long bolts have been snapped off for some time going by the rust?
Snapped is dead common as they are fcuktards for seizing solid, the trick is a smear of grease or red hermetite to stop coolant travelling down the threads.

Well spotted my old eyes didn’t see that until you pointed it out,

I also used stainless steel studs for the rest. Made a cock up with one that goes through the water pump but I don't want to talk about it:oops::D

Well that's torn it..

Got everything cleaned and started the reassembly process, couldn't get the timing belt to fit so rang for help and with some effort we got the belt on

Wound it over by hand several times, all good, so my mate said just give it a spin on the keys to check it quick with no water in it before we put everything else on. Now i wouldn't have done that but figured what the hell he has owned a lot more landrovers than me and have rebuilt several from barn find..etc. etc.

took a video to show but it is not great.

turns out my fluid leak from timing cover isnt water...

It is bloody Diesel...

So now belt off def need a new one, covered in diesel, pump off, so guess best take it to get it refurbed, reckon seal has gone at front it is pouring out of the front where the pulley bolts on.

Unless you wonderful people think otherwise, gutted thought i was going to have it back in use by Sunday eve...

It's a DIY job if you're careful although I've not done it myself, seal is cheap enough and no special tools required.
