Did the cam/crank dots line up with arrows and match the EP measured with dti , as you mentioned it was a bit off earlier in post 83 but you might have just went with that

have you followed the manual timing instructions for the early or later engine
is solenoid getting voltage and working ok

Hi Steve

Yes everything lined up...3 dots on 3 arrows.
Tappets all set.
Took a video of each injector to illustrate spray...looks great to me!! But it wouldn't let me upload!!

yes you have to put in on u tube and do a link for videos, more of a fine spray than a squirt reqd

Ok.

I am about at the point of giving up on this engine.....haven't made any progress in weeks.

Will just save up and buy a running engine...I've spent long enough on it.

Thanks for the pointers.

Steve

and when dots lined up did it match the max EP measured with DTI see fault table above

Yes everything on the list ticked....

All point to defective pump which is wierd as its the only thing on the engine I haven't messed with. Will start saving and see what santa brings...no idea how much a replacement pump is....
Cheers

If this was a rebuilt petrol engine I'd bet good money on the distributor being set one revolution out.

Whereabouts are you? Plenty of people from here wouldn't mind dropping in for a cup of tea.

I live in spain...you're welcome to drop in for tea!!
Unfortunately there were millions of santana built here but so little by the way of forums, parts, mechanics etc.
Spain has very little in second hand motors...especially for modification as it is not allowed here!!

Cheers

I've gone back to the beginning of the thread and @tottot is certain that you must use the pin into the side of the injection pump.

Have you done that?

This isn't magic or bad luck. As you say, the pump was fine before, so still is now. The timing is wrong.

Yes I did the pump timing with the pin in the side and the arrow lined up with the mark.
I have done the timing several times with several methods and I'm now sick to death of it.
I'm not doing any more to it for a while....if you've been to the begining of the thread you'll know I've been going round in circles....something is obviously wrong....but what???
Cheers

Well, I do sympathise, and walking away from it for a while is a good idea. But DON'T buy another engine, this one's fine but we're missing something.

You know I mentioned the distributor being out a few posts ago? Yep, me five years ao after rebuilding a 2.25 petrol. Got thoroughly fed up and had a couple of days off before the penny dropped.

This one is 2.5 diesel and should be sooooo simple.

This thread has a happy ending and similar

It’s off the defender thread and also worth a search on that forum, and more people might have had similar experiences

Thanks Steve but I went through everything so many times it was impossible for me to be 180 out as I did rotate (just in case) I don't have problems with pumps as fuel shooting at least 4 feet from injector pipes and a good 1 foot spray from injectors....I have a problem but don't know what it is.....I have postponed working on it for the game being (for my sanity really) otherwise I can see me putting a match to it lol!
I've read so much from all sorts of different sources and can possible repeat verbatim every method to time a 12J or 2.5na or whatever it is. We will see whenever I decide to have another go at it....if ever

Cheers,

Hi all,

Well I couldn't resist having one last go.....
Checked everything....again!

Well eventually it started! I did have it on full throttle for a few seconds but when I reduced the throttle it wouldn't self sustain....it started again after a couple of seconds cranking but will only run on half to full throttle - as soon as reduced it stops!
And....its blowing out a lot of white smoke...a lot!!

So...I'm assuming that the white smoke is unburnt fuel? And therefore pump timing may be the issue? Everything else it new....injectors, head gasket, gloplugs, valves, valve seats.....

I checked the timing marks after a few runs and all are still lined up....three dots on 3 arrows.

Where should I go to first (apart from the scrappy's lol).

Cheers,

Steve
