Picked up a Warn M6000 winch this weekend, cheap, un-tested but thought working!

Not a chance .. Motor nackered, at least one solenoid nackered, and a lot of rust, freespool not, engagement handle a bit wobbly and moves too easily! So, probably not worth what I'm paying for it, but hey-ho, sh1t happens and I bought as seen ..

Didn't take a pic of it 'as bought', it's just an old winch after all .. but the following is what I found after electrically testing and finding the motor not working and producing magic smoke, and a solenoid doing nothing at all probably due to having a broken post!

First pic is when I took the motor off and saw this, looking into the winch drum ..

Second is the armature/spindle and drum drive ...

I'm hoping most of the ****e kicking about is grease, but the mating faces on both the motor case and the winch drum suggest otherwise.

The other end of the motor tells the story. Two brushes immovable, one broken spring, one brush broken, another spring partially rusted through and a fair amount of rust. I reckon the winch has been used through water and not dried/cleaned afterwards ..

The flash pic shows that water/rust is on one side, in this case the top half is quite rusty, the bottom half isn't! So I reckon the winch has been stored at some point of it's life with water sitting in it for a while.

So that's the state of play, too cold to stay out anymore and F1 is on now anyway! Going to try and clean this end up and at least get the motor spinning up. Then I'll work towards the other end, the rope looks rusty underneath and I need to get a hook spliced on properly. Check the gearing and engagement handle/housing.

Should be fun .. 'specially as I want it done within a couple of weeks and no money for spare parts!!

my advice m8..throw it away you will spend so much time and money on it and at the end of it you wont have a massively powerful winch anyway..

a decent motor is gonna set you back £200

Maybe ..

Going to clean it up and see what's what .. only cost £60 so I expected a few issues .. time's not a problem really, and it's something to fettle when I'm bored.

The bow motors ment to be good, bow 2 has more power and speed I belive, wlm will be about soon with an answer.

bow motor 2 is one hell of a bit of kit very powerfull and very fast got one on my 8274 and its had a lot of use this weekend in the mud

Its not too bad. My superwinch was the same until i cleaned everything up and then it worked fine

Cleaned my stock warn motor worked for a bit then went bang so now need to replace it seen the bow motor 2 for 210 at giggle pin

Cos a was not happy when the 8274 gave up this weekend and my rear winch

Just found out it's actually an M8000 .. not much more power, but then I don't intend to use it for Pay 'n plays or winch challenges, just for 'insurance' for green-laning!

It'll be easier, possibly stronger, and possibly just as reliable as the Hi-lift and chains I currently use!!

Been out for a play and found that when the motor shaft turns ('cos I worked the shaft with an adaptor and cordless driver) the drum works, and after running backwards and forwards for a while, the freewheel works too. I think it's hard 'cos it looks like the rope has been wound on and sat there for ages, so developed a 'set' .. so it's all looking much better today! Been to buy some parts de-greasing fluid (Gunk, great stuff) and hope to have the motor end all cleaned up by this afternoon. Found where I can get brushes and springs from cheaply, locally (washing machine wholesaler!!) so reckon the motor will be working by the end of the week, or next weekend, depends when they can get parts in.

No more pics yet, nowt to add ... and the digi-cam has decided to not bother anyway!

I would be doing the same if i could get one for £60.
Im not a winch man (yet) but can you increase pulling power with them pully things (snatch blocks)

Yeah. A single snatch block in theory doubles the pull, but also doubles the length of rope needed, and halves the speed!

ie if you set a strop up to a tree, instead of just a straight pull, include a snatch block at the tree and hook back onto the vehicle. Twice the rope, twice the pulling power (or half the electricity needed, very roughly) but half the speed.

Doesn't worry me, means the winch is lighter and uses less power, it just takes longer to winch out of somewhere .. but as a step-up from a Hi-Lift it should be worth my time to fettle it a bit .. I reckon by the end it will have cost about £100 or less for a fully refurbed Warn M8000 winch ..

I is quite happy about it 'cos money isn't really available for it!

Bit less than happy now. After cleaning a lot more crud away, it seems that the drum/motor plate is broken completely .. it houses the motor armature bearing and allows the drum to spin freely .. the motor housing bearing is completely broken, so needs replacing. It's been 'done' a long while too .. some of the crud is chemi-metal of some sort, so someone's been trying to fix it, unfortunately not very well. It's no wonder it looked 'wrong' when I first took the motor off, I couldn't work out why the bearing and half housing came with it! Couldn't see the full picture till I'd cleaned more of it and checked it against the parts diagram from Warn.

Hey ho, this one might not be fixed ... parts are "not readily available in UK, and are well expensive to import", so I was told on the phone ...

So if anyone has any broken Warn winches that they were going to scrap, and wants to make donations instead, so I can scavenge bits from many to make one good one, post ASAP!!! ...

Does it have to be a warn bearing???
