Picked up a Warn M6000 winch this weekend, cheap, un-tested but thought working!
Not a chance .. Motor nackered, at least one solenoid nackered, and a lot of rust, freespool not, engagement handle a bit wobbly and moves too easily! So, probably not worth what I'm paying for it, but hey-ho, sh1t happens and I bought as seen .. Didn't take a pic of it 'as bought', it's just an old winch after all .. but the following is what I found after electrically testing and finding the motor not working and producing magic smoke, and a solenoid doing nothing at all probably due to having a broken post!
First pic is when I took the motor off and saw this, looking into the winch drum ..
Second is the armature/spindle and drum drive ...
I'm hoping most of the ****e kicking about is grease, but the mating faces on both the motor case and the winch drum suggest otherwise.
The other end of the motor tells the story. Two brushes immovable, one broken spring, one brush broken, another spring partially rusted through and a fair amount of rust. I reckon the winch has been used through water and not dried/cleaned afterwards ..
The flash pic shows that water/rust is on one side, in this case the top half is quite rusty, the bottom half isn't! So I reckon the winch has been stored at some point of it's life with water sitting in it for a while.
So that's the state of play, too cold to stay out anymore and F1 is on now anyway! Going to try and clean this end up and at least get the motor spinning up. Then I'll work towards the other end, the rope looks rusty underneath and I need to get a hook spliced on properly. Check the gearing and engagement handle/housing.
Should be fun .. 'specially as I want it done within a couple of weeks and no money for spare parts!!
