Have treated myself to a 32mm viscous fan spanner but am struggling to remove the fan as it spins, moving the belt and turning engine over. How do I lock the shaft which the fan is attached to?

Turn the engine over and see which way it turns !
Will it come off if it's a right hand thread ?

Hi, it be a 300 tdi. Have tried it in both directions - can't fire up the engine as the heads in bits!

it's a left hand thread, so clockwise to undo.
try to hold the shaft with something and give the spanner a sharp tap with a hammer. that usually works.
don't bother putting it back on, it's not needed.

Is the fan not required for when in traffic or are you saying to remove completely but replace with an electric one? Surely it'll overheat with nuffink?? Ta

just take it of and leave it of,i have put a new one on mine but it is over cooling the engine,so its coming off asap.

unless yer plannin on towing heavy trailers up long steep hills in the sahara, the fan is not required on 200 or 300 injuns.
not had one on mine fer 2 years - never goes above 5/8 on the gauge, even when left ticking over for an hour in 30deg heat on Monday (whilst winching Pikey's 90 back onto its wheels).

not got one on my 300tdi either and it runs better now it can get to proper working temp.
