My Defender 90_300tdi has developed a vibration . Its ok up to 30 mph but once I pass this speed a vibration becomes evident up to about 50mph where things smooth out . I did have really chunky off road tyres on , I have recently fitted Goodyear Wranglers which has quietened things down a bit but hasnt reduced the vibration . Any ideas ?

Mine had the same , twas the rear prop . had to replace it as the ujs had been welded in . So i just renewed the prop.
runs good now.:)

I am wondering if i took the rear propshaft off and locked the diff , drove it up the road would this prove if the shaft was knackered ?

Easier to just inspect your props, check there is no movement, look for damage.
You should be able to feel if there is play in the UJ's by gripping the shaft firmly in your hand and give it a shake:lol:
Hold it near the end of the prop near the UJ and move it up and down there should be no play at all, do that on all four UJ's and you should locate the faulty one/ones if a visual dont find owt.
They are cheap and I think buster done a guide on their replacement.
I had vibration on my old RRC and that was indeed UJ's but the were well gone and had to replace the whole prop.

prop uj's definitely - test em while they are still on the vehicle - chock wheels, handbrake off, wiggle them about a bit, if they move replace em! Check for movement in the driveshaft splines as well - if there is any whatsoever you will get a rumble.
