I have a 3.9i Disco on LPG and have been trying without much success to find what would be the optimum timing for it to be set at. I realise that LPG likes a lot of advance compared to the 5 deg BTDC for Petrol, but as I start it on petrol until it has properly warmed up then switch across to LPG, there must be a optimum setting somewhere between the two. Ideally I'd get my hands on one of RPI's ignition modules, but Christmas is coming and I'm skint, that's why I'm on LPG !!
Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Hey,I've got a 3.9 V8 which at this very moment is bein converted to gas,hopefully picking it up tomorrow. when I do I'd be happy to provide any of the details that will come on the certificate of conformity with the LPG system. This is my second LPG disco,the first being a 3.5 carb V8. If it helps at all the 3.5 was running 8 deg BTDC and a 0.7mm gap on the plugs(NGK BP6E nothing special as simple seems to be better)which helps a lot.I also use magnecor igntion leads to get the best spark possible.

Thanks, I've got it running on NGK's and magnacor HT's and a Lucas dizzy cap, i just want to make sure that I get the timing spot on as I know that it can make all the difference.
 
Hi can you tell me do the magnecor leads make a big difference when running on gas.( sorry to hi-jack your forum)
 
Hey,the magnecor leads dont necessarily make a great deal of difference to overall performance but have noticed that it runs a lot smoother and will start better in colder temperatures. I previously had some bosch leads (around £30) which degraded over a few months and resulted in rough running and the occasional backfire which came back thru the carbs into the air box! since running the magnecor leads for the last three and a half years I've had no such problems.
 
Yeah I agree, the magnacor leads are definatley worth the money, with a Lucas dizzy cap and arm, its all running very smooth, all as should be.
 
if you stick a cheap emerald, or gems etc ignition module on ( I am sure there are cheaper ones about,) then you can run a specific ignition advance on the warm up map. you could put plenty of advance on the main map, and set the warm up map to lower advance settings.
The extra advance is due to the higher octane level. more advance=more power. you could just tip octane booster in the petrol, then you could run the same advance :)

Just a thought. but the bio-ethanol E85 that morrisons are selling now is about 112 octane it hink thats the same as lpg. so with the advance can you run that instead of petrol and get more power for less money???
 
hi sorry to jump in,i have bought a brc front end kit second hand,is there anybody here that could fit it for me,and tune the lpg for me
