yesterday i went to start my defender. it started turning over but didnt start. in the end it was making a clicking sound. i took the battery out and charged it up over night but nothing changed. in result of this im now late for work (boss is gunna be P!$$£d)

can anyone please send me some advice for this is my A to B car and hate public transport

cheers

Ben

What engine?? have you tried slackening a fuel pipe off ot make sure it's getting fuel is it petrol or doozil?? no info equals no/bad/poor advice

it sounds like either the battery isnt holding a charge in which case you need a new battery, or the starter motor soloniod is stuck, if you have a volt meter check the battery voltage, if above 12 volt try putting the car in gear with ignition off and rocking it, that should free the soloniod so it should start but you then need to either re-con your starter or buy a new one

its the starter motor i had the same problem. one of a long list could be a stuck solenoid or a knackered clutch or some thing in the starter. i doubt its the battery easy job by the way few hours tinkering

Lol - think that was meant to be hitting it or something similar only using more expletives! I've got an old golf mk2 thats starter sticks occasionally (like anytime I'm miles away from a garage or civilisation!) and a good swift beating with something heavy usually gets it turning again

hahaha in that case... Be right back :D

It works a treat. Also, the wire may have slipped off, the single wire on the front, presumabley the negative body wire

Fingers crossed mate coz thats about the limit of my knowledge, but def sounds like the starter to me, coz when the golf packs up I get the click (of the solenoid) but nothing else too. Only other thing I've done in the golf is bump start it but dont like to think of the carnage a 2 tonne landy might cause if it didnt start and then didnt have pas or power to the brake servo etc as you went flying off down a hill!
