It's on a garage in calais and the people there don't speak English. I will find out more maybe today. They cleared the fault code and I drives normally pointing to a flaky sensor. I doubt I will get the fault code out of them.

I will have to buy a fault code reader now. Suggestions please. I will search later. Of to disneyland with my daughter now.

Do mafs need cleaning. This is something I can do. I bet it something simple like that. Air filter was changed in July.

Not on a Rangie, but on my mother's little run around (Fiat 500), she took it in for a service and a few weeks later it had the check engine light on, kept going into limp mode, wouldn't idle right.
Finally got it home. Fault code said MAF sensor.
The Main Dealer had over filled the oil, which had contaminated the MAF Sensor, because nothing is allowed to vent to the outside world nowadays so the oil was getting pumped back into air intake. A good clean and some oil sucked out so the level was right and all's well. Sensors are a mixed blessing.
 
It happened again on the way home. That French garage did not fix the problem. Its a pr9bably sensor fault and it could just be the maf plug as the car fine with good fuel economy till it did not. In any case either I or Keith at Glemsford motor services will fix it properly.

It's been a long day but I am not worried by this.
 
Well predictably clearing the fault code did not last long. I feared this. Broke down last night 20 miles from home and had to wait 5.5hrs for pickup. Got home at 3am in the end. Recovery truck are slow but at least I got home with the car.

I suspect the problem is really quite simple but I have to wait to get a fault code reader first.

I will have to try to my luck with the breakdown company to recover the 130 paid to the garage I France to not fox the problem.

Even with my limited knowledge clear a fault code does not fix the underlying problem.

I think I prefer cars with no sensors.

Might be worth a post to the Regional Landyzone bit to see if anyone local can pop by with one.
I'd have a look at the MAF sensor to see if it's obviously contaminated and if so, what the contaminant looks like.

They at least did try. As for over filling the engine with oil and it coming into contact with the maf... That's not possible I'm afraid, the maf is usually right next to the air filter. Damn, your engine elreally would have been full!!
Most garages don't have the diags for some of the landrover models. They should have told you this straight away and sometimes dealing with an obvious problem like a dirty maf could be a fix but then sometimes there are deeper issues at foot. o_O
I hope you get it sorted, being stuck with your family and a car full of gubbins ain't nice at all;)

Oil level is fine. All filter changed quite recently. Keith has it now. By the time I get my fault code reader he should have sorted it out. Sadly this means the valet is delayed again.

It's a PITA, but at least you got to Disney and all got home in one piece, and the Rover is with someone you trust to sort it out.
Sensors are a mixed blessing, personally I'm glad I don't have them but I'm not what most people would call normal!
 
My other car as one and a half sensors. An air flow meter but these rarely just fail. They wear out giving tell tail signs. There is a crank position sensor but in 1988 it's a variable reluctantance sensor so is far simpler and a bit analogue.

Maybe I should add replacing all the engine and gearbox sensors to my list of preventive maintenance. That sound silly just writing it.

Seems a bit overboard, and the price to put decent sensors in I'd wait until they fail or show signs personally.
A code reader you can stick on it at short notice makes the whole process a lot less frustrating.
 
Keith has figured it out. Rocker cover gaskets were a known thing to do. This week in fact. It so happens they have ****ed oil all over the spark plugs and that lead to a misfire. Although the car has not been using oil, some has got out anyway over time. Well it sound like the car is misfiring but when the car idled with the maf unplugged that made me think different. The Maf is still being changed as there was a fault code for that along with multiple misfires.

Another garage did the service in September but they did not change the spark plugs. Coils seem fine.

However with all the poking about a couple of wires leading to a sensor near the fan ( radiator fan switch) have shorted themselves. This is old. The copper wire is exposed in places and has gone green. The electrical issue has not stopped the car running or caused any issue that's known but a loom repair is also required.

The cars temperature gauge never went above half way but it did sometimes drop in engine temp like the fan was running when it should not have been. Another fault found.

One day at a time sweet Jesus, just think of all the smiles per gallon your going to get for your money, mind you you get more with a diesel :p;)
