hi all you yodas out there, a little assistance on identifying which transmission i have if you could please? m reg disco 1 300tdi manual. ive got an oil leak so im visiting the gaskets and a fluid change too.

thanks all.;)

You have stated you have a manual gearbox therefore you don't have an automatic transmission.

Next :)

Awww, c'mon be nice to the noob, at least he did say please.
You've probably got a five speed R380 manual gearbox and a LT230T transfer box.

And here on LZ we tend to talk in terms of year of manufacture rather than registration letter; means a lot more.

hilarious discool, thank you brian. yes its a 1996, and was hoping to find out specifically which one it is. r380 or lt230t, is there a serial number i can use? or is it easier to distinguish than that, thought the best place for such a question would be here, where the experience with such vehicles might exist and hopefully find people willing to share such knowledge to help preserve these motors.:bounce:

If it's '96 you could be pretty sure it is an R380, the earlier Disco manual ran an LT77 up until March 1994. LT230 refers to the transfer case, that is common with the auto trans equipped Discos as well.
Mostly I've found the oil leaks about the gearbox coming from the transfer case intermediate shaft seals, cheap to buy but a fair mission to fit,(TX box right out), but possible to stop the leaks if the shaft has not flogged out the casing bore badly.

Just in case it's still not clear it has both not either, the r380 is the gearbox ie 1 to 5 and reverse and the lt230 is the transfer box that splits the single gearbox output between the front and back axles also giving the high and low ratio ability.
