Hi i have a 1996 dse i have jacked up one front wheel with autobox in N and handbrake on the wheel spins free with one finger If this is not right would it stop my auto box locking in 4th gear .I have no faults showing Thanks Pete
 
Dont think it should spin with only one wheel off ground! Definitely something not right maybe diff?
How do you mean would it stop it going into 4th?
Is it over reving?
 
If it spins that freely snapped half shaft i would think. I suppose you did look to see if you have a front prop shaft? No faults will show and no it will not effect torque lockup or 4th gear.

Hi the autobox changes up and down all gears but dose not lock TC it just picks the rev up this is how i found transfer box spins free on propshaft looks like it has to come out thanks Pete
 
Hi i have looked at transferbox drive and i think the vcu is very loose as on a wet field it spins front wheels .I had jacked up one front wheel with auto box in (N) and hand break on and it spins free without any force.so i think it would be like clutch slip because the TC dose not lock in 4th it just pick the reves up .all gear changes work ok but dose over rev I have had this p38dse for 7 years.thanks Pete

Don't think you are listening are you? The torque converter has nothing to do with the VCU. With a front wheel off the floor you should NOT be able to turn the wheel, prop and VCU excepting with great difficulty.

so i have 2 problems one on mainbox and one on transferbox would i be right in if i removed front prop would car not drive if the vcu was very loose would this have same efect witch could give higher revs on engine cheers
 
Have you tried jacking the other front wheel? If the wheel you raise turns the prop, then that half shaft and the diff are OK, and you have a prob in the VCU/transfer box. BUT if you raise the other front wheel and it turns freely WITHOUT turning the prop, the halfshaft (& poss diff) on that side are shot.

But you still have a transfer box/VCU problem as the front prop shouldn't turn easily with only one wheel raised.

Does it spin rear wheels also on wet grass?
 
yes it spins rear wheels the prop turn into the transferbox halve shafts both good I can only think vcu very loose and not driving front wheels untill higher revs is this posible cheers

What do you mean it spins the rear wheels? If you are turning the front wheel with a rear wheel also off the ground, it will turn fairly freely unless the handbrake is on.
If you drop the front prop and the VCU is fecked, the car should not move.

If a drive shaft was broken at either side it would not turn the prop. :);)
 
Hi i have done the test with one front wheel jacked up and wheel spins free. i have run round a field and back and front wheels spin on grass.i have looked at drive shafts all ok diffs ok vcu must be very loose and needs extra revs to turn front prop this gives higher revs to change gear as i have vcu slip would this sound right cheers

The VCU does not drive the front prop, the centre diff does that. the VCU is simply an automatic diff lock for the centre diff.
With the handbrake on and the gearbox in P you should not be able to turn the front wheel even if the VCU is knackered.
