OK time for another SITREP:

After the flush and refill with 20w/50 I can quite clearly and catagorically say that I have now found the solution and have solved the Oil Pressure issue with my P38.......

I bought a Defender

I have an inkling it is Cam and Cam Bearings...as the oil goes 3 places on leaving the pump, Down to the crank and also up to the Camshaft and then on to the Rockers....if the Camshaft and Cam Bearings are worn, the oil will not make it up to the rockers as it is all coming out of the cam bearings.

Considering the amount of time and money I have currently spent on trying to rejuvenate this engine and facing the prospect that I could throw another £300+ in cam, followers, rockers, pushrods, etc etc at it and 'see' if that is going to sort it out with no guarantee I have decided to draw a line under it and move on.

As you know myself and the other half were discussing another L322, but she has always had a massive thing for 90 pick-ups....so while we were looking at L322's we came across the one above, at a third of the price of an L322, with very little in the way of electrical items to go wrong, fitted with the 200Tdi engine (no complex electronics...mechanical cable operated injection pump) to say the Rocker area is sparkling is an understatement, pristine under the oil cap!!

She smokes a bit on first start, but I am thinking possibly dribbly injector!

Once she has run for a couple of minutes she is fine....a bit of a tractor but there is no complicated BeCM or Databuses to worry about.

So there it is....I get my L322 back and she gets the Land Rover she has been hankering for for years!!

She's happy, I'm happy.......now just have to sell the Fiat 500 and figure on what to do with 1.9 tonnes of P38...!!!

Well done, both happy. May not be cam bearing failure but they have been known to turn in the block so cutting of the oil supply because the oil drilling does not line up. Get it sorted , don't scrap it:)

sell the 38 complete on net ant as not the best of breakers(moneys in the engine) & your left with 1.5 ton of c**p outside.i loved all the 90,110s & 130 I had but sadly parted as being a bigger bloke like yourself  found them too uncomfatable & lost more sleep at night than feeding my twins boys when they where babies;)nice choice if the lady likes it enjoy

Sad to hear that Saint. After all the effort you've put in too. It has been an education for most of us following your fixes.

I loved my old Defender, it was bullet-proof, apart from the legs on the chassis which rust like a ***er. That's a good looking one you have there though. Very nice. Tomcat is right though, you have to sit sideways with your shoulder out the window as the cab is way too narrow!

The biggest problem you've got now is thieving pikies - if you don't bolt the sodding thing down it will go missing...

A mate of mine put some kind of a solenoid in on his brake lines so he could press the brake then isolate the lines keeping brake pressure locking the wheels. It can still be lifted of course! :D

Good lord, a bit of sense at last:)
Sell the P38 as seen tested and approved, list the work done on the engine if you are honest and add it may need some more work. A lot less effort than breaking it.

That is my biggest concern.....it is fitted with a super secret 'James Bond' battery isolation device, a steering locking bar and a pedal lock.

I will be looking at getting the disc lock for the steering and a proper pedal box guard too....

I like the idea of the brake pressure solenoid, might have a word with our hydraulic team at work and see if we can fit a similar device...and also one that removes hydraulic pressure from the clutch so the mster won't actuate the slave!

She has the 200Tdi from a Disco so not the standard 200 unit as fitted to the Defender, but she pulls well and whilst won't set the world on fire, is capable to keep up with traffic!!

Just gotta sort out the wiper motor and reverse lights!!

Bet it's you that ends up driving it Ant, too noisy, too uncomfortable, too small for Summer and all her stuff etc. Just give it time and wife will commandeer the L322.

Oh, it is currently my daily driver as we discussed once I have fixed and ironed out the niggles, Summer will be less reliant on all the stuff you have to lug around for her....then Anna can use it!

Have to say while I am a through and through Range Rover man.....the noise, bounce and lack of creature comforts is growing on me! :D:D

(Don't panic people...I am a Range Rover man - that is never ever going to change and I still have the L322 which I will continue to drive...she is having it all to herself!)

St.
I would agree to list the p39 whilst it is still running and get rid ASAP.

The defender makes great sense although I completely agree with Keith....you will never drive the l322 again.......unless with all the family in of course.

would be interested in a oil sample test result before you get gearbox rebuild.

best wishes.

Is a defender such a good idea for baby transport with no back seats or airbags?

I was thinking the same reading this.
So Ant, you would only have the L322 as transport for Summer?

The L322 is the baby conveyance....the Defender is the vehicle for the other one of us to use.....

Summer never travelled in the P38 as it doesn't have isofix mounts, so having a 2 seat Defender makes no difference.

When I take Summer to nursery, I'll drive the L322 and when my partner takes Summer to the nursery she'll drive the L322.

during the weekends we use the L322.
