SITREP:

Although this post is related to this thread it isn't primarily about the P38.....

Regards the top end refresh planned for the P38 and the rumbling L322 issue, I have been chatting with the girlfriend who has kindly paid for nearly £600 worth of parts for my crimbo and birthday presents (£330 on Cam, followers, rods, rockers, shafts, springs, washers, caps, gaskets etc & £250 on new front cover, gaskets, oil etc) about the next issues.

We have decided that as the P38 doesn't 'need' the new cam and etc (although after 179k miles it could do with it, it just doesn't need to have it at the moment) and the impending doom that is the gearbox on the L322 as it is rumbling away and juddering quite a bit now, even after the oil and filter change a few weeks back.....

Photos as promised....sump is full of debris.....not long to go now me thinks...

As for the Overheat issue, so far so good, hoses were a bit firm earlier, so I'll wait for it to cool and check in the morning.....not 100% convinced the change in GB stat has cured it, as I have a feeling it is just lying in wait to do it again!

theres burnt clutch material in there

Yep, 'fraid so....not long now me thinks!

I do have a rumble around the 30-40 danger zone, and then again just over 50 (when the LUC is about to come on full lock) so it is on its way....just can't do that at the moment with Crimbo round the corner, so lets hope the fluid change will last a few months and I'll look at the work in the early months of next year!

....

The time is rapidly approaching to do something about it.

Before when the first rumble happened in Jan 2013 prior to the first oil/filter change we were considering have the box rebuilt and a revised oil cooling system fitted, but the fluid change helped out considerably and it is only recently the rumble has returned.

Also, the L322 ignition key is playing silly games....it will unlock and open the tailgate fine, but trying to get it to lock the vehicle is a right ar$e, so I will be needing to replace that too...!!!

So, to this end we have decided to return the cam etc parts as discussed with Island4x4 they are happy to have items returned unused for a full refund, as the P38 runs and works...the refresh is just that...a refresh, it is not 'strictly' needed...I may just change the rocker shafts anyway and leave the rest.

Shame as I would like to do the work, to breathe new life into the engine, but at the moment a rebuild on the L322 gearbox is more important.....and unfortunatly I don't have the time or space or skill to do the rebuild myself, so I will be looking around at a specialist to do the rebuild. Because we now have Summer (our 8 month old daughter), I cannot have the L322 off the road for a couple of weeks while I set about rebuilding the box, so I would rather entrust it to someone who can do it in a fifth of the time and also guarantee their work!

So that's the score...refresh on hold....L322 gearbox to be rebuilt/replaced....new key for the L322....2015 looks like it is going to be an expensive year!

Sorry to hear the g/box woes - told you to git rid of the bloody thing (L322) and buy another one that works! :)
See below...!!!
Hope you appreciate what a tolerant wife you have.

Your Mrs sure is something!:) where did you find her.. are there any more ? ;) :)
After pulling the rocker cover off and discovering a horror story underneath, I got home and showed her the pictures and video...

Before I even started talking about what to do or not do as the engine is probably on its last rites, she said that she was driving around this morning after dropping Summer off at the nursery looking at the other cars going past, she said that whilst we have the Fiat 500, she has now got so used to the L322 that going back to the 500 just wouldn't cut it, so she says and advocates (and it was HER idea) that we should sell the Fiat, get what we can scrap-wise...parts etc from the P38 and buy another L322 but it has to be a V8 on LPG....she then spent an hour going through Autotrader app on her iPad and she was quite taken by a 2006 Vogue....although I did try to tell her it was out of our price range!!

But, she is willing to have two L322's.....now before the haters start flaring up....I love the L322 and so does she....and having owned one for the last 2.5 years, I am fully aware of all their little issues...heck the one we have has a couple of niggles....but she is happy to suffer them...she is almost as big a fan of them as I am....she certainly said nothing else would do.....as we had been looking at Disco 3's....but she said it has to be an L322!!!!

God I love this woman :D:D:D:D:D

Bbbb..but but Saint V8 without a P38? What! Really?! ;) Just keep it going till you get the gearbox done. It is a real Landy afterall, and will keep going longer than you expect it to.
(some might say for longer than the 'other' one...)

Is saintv8 going to have to be re-aliased to SaintTractor ?

Maybe you fail to know that most tractors in the early days were fitted with petrol engines. It was only later in their development that the superior diesel engine was fitted. When did a petrol engined car last win Le Mans? :D:D:D

get what we can scrap-wise...parts etc from the P38

Can I buy your nearly new front timing cover and water pump when it comes to it please?

And your wheels. And a few bits of interior trim you won't need anymore….
