So I started cleaning of the roof so I can put it on before I lift the body off for a bit more strength.

Fould this

One of the previous owners decided it would be a good idea to paint the roof with either underseal or bitumin. I would like to meet this person to tell him how wonderful I think his idea was, A1, total brainwave and a revolution in car painting, should be sent out to all manufacturers and implemented straight away :fencing::fighting::hurt::violent::violent::violent::mil86::mil21::mil52::5brant::censored::censored::censored:

So spent 2 hours with sand paper and white spirit rubbing it down like wet and dry. Luckily it was only around the sunroof and down the edges, everywhere else it had flaked off and fetched the paint off with it.............

Ha ho, back on it tomorrow.

Congratulations... it must be a relief.. Could the black **** on the roof perhaps have been old adhesive for vinyl ?

Nice wish I had know a blow torch and scraper would of got it of real quick the heat hardens the glue for scraping and if it was bitumen from underNeath would of softened it for scraping never mind good job :)

Glad to see I didn't hold you up too much. Did you get home for dinner on time?

Na, don't worry you didn't hold me up to much, the bloke came for the bonnet after you left so didn't leave the yard till 5.50, had to be in St Albans at 6

Don't think it was vinyl roof, there is body colour paint on it and the previous owner did say he painted the roof but it didn't stick.

The only thing that would shift it was white spirits, industrial steam cleaner at 150c and full pressure didn't shift it.

I strip cars for a living to be blasted

The glue is sticky and clogs sanders ect by burning with a torch it burns the glue allowing it to lose it elasticity thus you would be able to scrape then sand it

If it were bitumen you would heat from underneath thus allowing it to not go gooey and soften allowing you to scrape it ;)

Ok, point taken, if I find any more then I will do that. Does it distort the metal at all???

No as long as you don't generate the heat in one particular spot for too long do a area at a time
I'm not in the business to distort we have rare expensive cars here and our restorers wouldn't return although if its ally your to be extremely Carefull

Yes its an ally roof next to the sunroof opening that looks like it was cut with a jigsaw

Cool you doing a fantastic job there keep it up .

How you getting paint of with ally we get the bulk off with a chemical neo paint stripper for ally so there is no distortion through blasting and when the bulk is off we give it a gentle blast at about 20 psi on a shallow angle
You could sand the last bit :)
Ps you can use the stripper on the glue sometime too depending on what type it's a case of trial on some glues

I am sanding with 600 grit to get any loose off then 2-3 coats of etching primer and then quick sand and top coats.

That's the plan anyway.

Sorry no lunch time update today, been busy though.

Washed the roof down with white spirit ready for painting.

Stirling work there Stu... Can I ask if you got the inner wheel arch and light box as a complete assembly ? Mine now resemble what's left on your workshop floor ! How it all stays where it is I'll never now !! Cheers.
