My names Gem and I have a 2004TD6 Vogue which I love more than my husband and yesterday it made a horrific noise... sounded like the exhaust exploding, I managed to get it into the drive but now it wont go into reverse. It made the sound on acceleration... My dad thinks it's toast... my husband says its not worth fixing but I am willing to sell both husband and dad if you can help me solve the situation.... any advice greatly appreciated!

I assume it's an L322? Does the engine run? If the engine runs, there are several possibilities but the GM gearbox is a known weak point. If the gearbox has failed, you may need to sell any children you may have as well as your husband and father.

Yes engine still runs..... Oh Really? I have 6 children... plus husband and father.... will that cover it?

Is there any chance its no oil in the gear box and a simple fix or do we think the gear box has gone to a better place?

If there was no oil in the gearbox, it's toast. Difficult to be sure what the problem is without seeing it but it does sound like a gearbox rebuild is in order. Where are you located? Maybe someone nearby who could give a better opinion.

How many miles has it done? around 100k is generally rebuild time.
If there was no oil I doubt it would have moved at all as the gearbox and torque converter (clutch) share the same oil.

If it made a big bang then you need to find out where.
Do they still use chains in the transfer box? Maybe it snapped?

Wouldn't expect a bang type nose from low oil. Maybe
A good question, it's an x5 transmission setup?? 🤔
My advice to the poster is to find someone who knows these cars who will help you better and more economically without just throwing time and money at it leaving you disappointed in the vehicle and the garage.
They may genuinely want to help but may not be genuinely able to.
🙏

I have been told they are sensitive to low voltage... the battery is showing 14.4V when running and 12.3 when engine off... could this be anything?
I admire your optimism.

So, to recap, the car made the ‘big bang’ when accelerating in a forward gear. It will still engage and drive forwards but, since it made the noise, it will no longer engage or drive in reverse. Is that correct?

I misread. I thought it wouldn't drive at all. Isn't there a sprag couch in these boxes? That might go bang if it fails? That should also kill the 'box with bits floating round if you continue to drive it?
