Right time for somethin seroius............hard for me but here goes.

I asked my LR (Not main dealer btw) how much it would be to have my Timing Belt changed...........at least £300 labour plus the cost of the parts!!!! :eek: :eek: :eek:
AUGH!!!!

So I had a look in the Haynes manual............Am I rite in thinking the whole engine has to come out??

Has anyone ever changed the Timing Belt on a Freaklander?

Oh and the garage said there are 2 belts..........has he got it right? They are really more of a Def and Disco garage, but they humour me by fixing the FL when she goes wrong!!!
 
There is room to change the belt by just taking off the rh engine mount,most of the stuff the manual tells you to remove is unecessary.Takes about 2 - 2 1/2 hrs.
 
Which engine are you talking about ? I have just had the belts changed on our old Rover 420 with the L series diesel in it cost £190.00 at the local garage for both belts. can't be much different on the Freelander.

It's a 98 2.ltr Perkins Diesel.........garage did say there were 2 belts on it.
£190.00 sounds better than over £300.
 
My timing belt is due to be changed in a few k, I have shopped around and my local LR garage will do it including the service 72k service for £345, so I think you must have been quoted the going price for not using a main dealer
 
I didn't know him.............(well not that I "know" him now) when I had it done. So that would have been a bit hard.

Yes there are two belts on the L series diesel, one for the cam and another at the back of the engine for the injection pump.

Engine doesn't need to come out, just take the mount off and lower/raise the engine as required.

Land Rover times say 6 hours to change both, then they say 6 hours to do a 48,000 service which includes changing the belts!

I have done them in the past in little over an hour.
 
Hi sorry to but in but does you know when the belts need doin on me 2.5 V6
cant see it in the service book or dose the V6 have a chain??? mines cummig up for 45k:confused:

Hi Joey. . . .was hopin the v6 guys would elp yer. . . .but i'm er rocket scientist so i will have ter do. . .er yer v6 has two internal timing 1=ancillary chain 2= timing [valves ] chain. . . .the good news is these are both chains. . .and so good fer 90,000 [and beyond that ] so dont go er worrin yerself. . . .un best oh luck. . . . .:) :) :)
 
thanks ming, least thats 1 less thing to worry about. just hopin the rest of it behaves it self!!! or am i being a bit optomistic! you guys dont fill me with hope when i mention the V6 word?????:confused: :eek:
 
it is prone to hgf as well as the usual freelandeer probs - check the water regularly and consider an electric water pump.
 
electric water pump? whats the diff is it more relieable than the belt drive? and if so how much should i pay for one?:confused: :confused:
