Respectfully, I'd expect more from a member of such standing. As car enthusiasts (as we all are), enjoying the qualities of a great sounding engine are surely something we can all appreciate.

W may disagree about what virtues are important in Range Rovers, but to class all V8s as being equivalent to socks down underpants is patently ridiculous and something I'd half expect to see written by some ill informed Greenpeace oddball than someone with such engineering knowledge and vehicle experience.
As far as I'm concerned, up to 3 Litres, 4 cylinders is more than enough to do the job, up to 4.5 litres 6 cylinders is enough and no road vehicle needs more than 4.5 litres IMO. Eight cylinders in a V is just over complication and a 4.0 or 4.6 is two cylinders too many, hard to work around in many cases too. It is also in the Range Rover an unreliable piece of crap.
A V8 is all about image, why anyone would buy a gas guzzling unreliable V8 powered P38 is beyond me.

Ahhh but a V8 does sound fantastic - which is why I like them! Plus volumetric efficiency of a cylinder drops off drastically past 300cc per cylinder and gets worse from there on - so V8s do make sense in the sort of capacities you are talking about, most car engine cylinders are way over-sized, and once you've gone to V6 - why not make a V8? You've already got the complication of two heads, two sets of valvetrain and driving chains/belts/gears etc. My 4.0litre V8 Jag engine was more fuel efficient than my 3 Litre V6 Citroën - performance and smoothness it was in another league - and the sound - no comparison!

As I said I find the sound annoying and with common rail injection the 300 cc thing is old hat.
Most trucks have reverted to 6 cylinders and some are 12 litres. Merc V10's seem to have disappeared, but then truck motors are about servicablility.

The 300cc thing is about normally aspirated petrol engines - it's related to getting enough air into the cylinder in the time allotted and making use of the charge effect of the incoming fuel/air (now just air) F1 engines (before they were neutered) didn't end up being 3 litre V10s for nothing. Of course if you Super/Turbocharge engines the individual cylinder capacity become almost irrelevant.

As for the sound thing - you don't like V8s - fine, you're in the minority when it comes to petrol heads.

F1 engines are somewhat different to a normally aspirated road engine. Were reasonable volumetric efficiency is nothing like as difficult to achieve. Even with cylinders of much larger capacity than 300 cc.

Must say it's a first to hear soemone say they dislike the sound of a V8....but hey ho, there's a first for everything i guess.
Personally i wasn't intent on getting a V8 for the sake of having a V8. I test drove the diesels first & wasnt impressed so opted for the V8 - nothing to do with image, all to do with driveability. But whilst i have a V8.... might aswell enjoy it :D
..........isn't that what it's all about anyway?

+1 too right.

I just wish my current exhaust system, about 1 yr old, sounded like the 3.5 and Janspeed I used to have. But I missed out on fitting something better on the P38 as it was in a local indy having some work done as I was too busy to do it myself. They phoned me and said the system was looking tired so being in a rush I just told they to replace whatever was needed to put it right. I ended up with a new full bog standard system and a bill for a grand after they struggled to fit at the manifold end. Ho hum, I should have waited and fitted a stainless system myself for a lot less money  You live and learn....

Question for those that have put exhaust on with the Janspeed is there a noticeable drone on the motorway at say 70mph

Mine did on the classic yes, not to the point that it bothered me. But with the P38 and the extra sound deadening I'd think it would be better, maybe others could confirm?

I had a system similar to Janspeed on my Toyota Supra a few year back and although it was not a boy racer 'loud' system it did also drone at higher speeds.

I don't notice any noise on the motorway. You do get a nice 'thrum' up & through 2000rpm. TBH unless you have the windows / sunroof down it's just a nice deep sound from the back end. I'ts not often i hear mine when someone else is driving but when my mechanic took it for a test drive round the block i could hear it all the way round....sounded nice, not loud enough by any stretch to annoy anyone, just sounds like a typical American V8.

That's possibly because it is a typical American V8. :D:D

Well, I'm happy with my new Double S system, total silence and a 3mpg improvement in fuel consumption. The less noise the better on long journeys IMO

What should I be searching for if I want to find someone who could custom build an exhaust, or even just replace my centre box with a straight through pipe? I'm assuming the usual kwik-fit type exhaust places will just want to fit standard parts rather than fabricating something specific, but searching for fabricators in my area just shows up big engineering companies who seem geared up for producing things for trade.

Ok all done now!

Firstly; for those of you who have V8 issues.....earn more money, buy a V8, get a life and stop commenting on threads that clearly have nothing to do with the P38 you are running. Haters not welcome! ;)

Martyn, the cats are awesome value for money....they don't make the 100cpsi version anymore but I am more than happy with the 200cpsi set I'm now running.

The verdict;
Janspeed cat back, Rimmer bros supplied SS 200cpsi sports cats.
Noticeable performance increase, smoother power band and a small fuel economy improvement.
Noise is no where near invasive inside or outside the car and simply enhances the natural sound of the V8 to an acceptable level.

I can recommend this set-up for anyone who feels they are in a similar position to me (wanted a relatively low cost swap-out option from manifolds back due to a knackered set of cats and beaten up exhaust) I will do manifolds next!

Next stop; Mark Addams chip....anyone running one?
