The chippys in Oban are good. Or Mr Pias in Inveraray is excellent if you are further down the road :)

I did it very quickly in a day when I was visiting friends in Aberdeen about five years ago. I went up the east side, across the top and down the west side in horizontal sleet and high winds. I posted some pictures on here. It was only later that I started seeing this advertised as the North Coast 500 and realised I'd done it. Although starting and finishing from Aberdeen means that it's not exactly 500 miles. Very pretty ride and I must do it again when I've got more time and can stop and have a look at the countryside more. Preferably when the schools aren't on holiday.

Never ever eat the salads! The Scots don't eat salad so its the same stuff put out day after day. I stopped for a kebab in Banff and said "yes" to salad. Guy's expression should have warned me. Appearently the local way is to say yes then chuck it over the pavement. Anyhow I got serious food poisoning so I reported it to the Banff food hygeine. The guy knew the kebab van well and said they'd often been to check him but he'd bin the food when they saw the inspector coming. Then he said I'd made 2 mistakes - 1 eating the salad, 2 stopping in Banff. I said that's a bit harsh, what would the Banff tourist office say? He said, I'm the tourist officer too. You have been warned!

You’re supposed to get them to deep fry the salad, that kills all the bugs you see!! :)

Thanks for the advice. but I also want to see the canal to the west. Mallaig Oban and Kyle localsh.

I hate phone autocorrect.

MJI, your original question has been hijacked a bit by some westcoasters.
Yes, the NC500 is a wonderful trip and as someone else said, May, June is a good time. To do it justice i would advise a week for the NC500 itself.
I did it over 40 years ago with a caravan in tow. Nearly all single track then.
There have been some improvements. One outstanding road is the Bealach Na Ba, (Pass of the Cattle) down to Applecross.
Just google Bealach Na Ba and see a really scary road.
The west of Scotland is also a fantastic experience, all the way from Stranraer up to Fort William then to Mallaig.
You can come back year after year to really appreciate our scenery.
remember , take only photo's, leave only footprints.
