N Z has upgraded to HP24, no room for the viscous so I helped sort the cooling. Personally I think a remap of the M51 would be easier
Personally a remap is easier that replacing the engine..

160+ Hp and 300+nm is achievable from what i've read, supporting modifications like a bigger FMIC would eek some more out..

My Friends DSE has a Remap "not a box of shít" and it goes so much better than a stock one, much more grunt down the low end.

Ours is reprogged and goes pretty well, it does actually drop the revs briefly to change gear and the fuel economy is better at 70mph. :cool:
 
That sounds like a proper remap not a Power Box?
Good evening my mate, i hope so, it was done in England à few years before I owned the bus. It was a £1200.00 effort with a big intercooler. I've got the receipt for it along with a book of tickets including a £24.000 receipt when it was 4yrs old. The second owner was a real land-rover but! Just like us:cool:

Sounds like it might have been done by Jeremy fern, them big intercoolers are not cheep or i would have one:(

How much grunt can the stock auto box cope with?
 
I'm not sure how that works on the zf box.
On the ar25 and AR 35 that vauxhall used for their omega range the ar25=250nm for the 2.5 diesel lump was constantly abused, the ar35 350nm was for the v6 3.0 petrol. (don't quote my ass)
Is the zf rated in ftlbs?
Hp22=220ftlbs and hp24=240ftlbs...
I've no idea.
I did fit the ar35 into my 2.5 diesel omega after swapping just the bell housing and it did work until I hand braked it and shot the box :oops:

The ZF4hp22 has a torque limit of 380nm if the box is maintained it will last..
However neglect and abuse it and don't expect a long life..
They are known to take over 450nm and 300hp without problem, the biggest killer is standing full throttle starts, this is what lunches them generally and excessive heat..
The same transmission is used in the V8 Classics, and RPI engineering straps stage 4 4.6 v8s to them without issue/

I did message them to confirm the gearbox was original, and it is! ;)

The 4hp24 in the 630r overfinch had over 400hp and 575nm of torque without issue, just the TCM changed.

Change the fluid and look after it..

Oh and revving the tits off it in Neutral or park can damage them..

The torque curve of the standard M51 is sufficiently destructive so the engine power has the be reduced on shifts. A Powerbox negates the torque reduction leading to premature failure of the box. A proper remap will maintain the required torque reduction.
