Seems to be a lot of it going about.

Rangie just overheated. Pulled in, opened the cap and a the coolant spewed out. Used my spare water, started it woth the cap off but 30 seconds later it dumped the water. Borrowed more water and limped as far as my mother's before needle went off the scale.

Got jobs to do so it will have to wait until this evening. I'll swap the fan with the scrapper but I fear this may be more serious.
Dangerous game taking the cap off like that:eek: It was the water pump on mine when it overheated rapidly like that.

Bl**dy mystery.

Finished working about 7pm. Arranged for a lift back thinking I would take the viscous fan and water-pump off the scrapper. Figured I may as well test the viscous fan before setting off as it was going to be a few hours round trip so plenty of time to cool down. Viscous shredded the newspaper so no issues there. Decided to try to make it home armed with lots of water and my friend following. Damn thing performed perfectly. Got home, left the engine running while I unloaded my tools but needle only just to the right of 12 o'clock. Switched it off.

So, what was it? Is it possible the stat stuck closed? Did the water pump seize and then free itself off again? I swapped to the metal pump soon after getting the car 10 years or so ago.

I dunno. It is messing with my mind.

If you can slip the belt off turn the pump (and idlers) back and fore by hand feel for roughness or play. wip stat out while your there, hose connections are tight, no splits or cracking letting a sip of air in you did mention other day how loose other clips were. After 10yrs worth giving a look over before pulling the head
