Hi all! Bought our Freelander (TD4 2001) with 97k miles a couple of years ago. After nearly 30k of hassle free driving - apart from a split hose- I now seem to have the dreaded fuel pump problem: Didn't start on the first turn then, when it did the car ran for about 5k before breaking down.

After getting a mate to tow me back I had a quick check of all the fuses (again) then gave the pump a few taps after which it started up....:). I think the pump is the problem?

Two questions:

Has anyone recently bought a genuine replacement part?

Has anyone fitted one, and was it much of a hassle to replace?

Any help appreciated.

I too had this same problem, after giving the pump a good bang, has not caused any problems since..

If the pump works with a bang and your electrical connection is good then it will be the pump failing. Mine has the later single pump under the drivers rear wheel arch and when it failed I initially replaced it with an after market pump that was noisy and only lasted 8 months before failing again - well worth paying extra for a genuine one.

If you have the under bonnet pump you will also have another pump in the tank - check first that this is working :)

Thanks for the tip. I guess you can hear the pump in the tank working?

Has anyone here changed the pump under the bonnet?

If it's not too complicated I might do it myself and post a picture for future 'do-it-yourself'
forum members.

I guess the problem with fitting yourself is the warrantee on the pump? Maybe it's not valid unless the garage does it?

Just managed to get my RAVE disc working - looks like the pump under the bonnet is straight forward enough.

Anyone bought one recently? Price?

:)

can't help with the price, google will help.

be careful releasing the fuel pipes as the connectors can break.

The under-bonnet one is only a bit more work than changing the fuel filter - it's on the same mounting. Doesn't take long, but you might find the diesel inlet pipe clip a bit awkward to get on/off as it's underneath the assembly.

Meant to say - the one I got back in the summer was off Fleabay, made by a company call Nemesis UK. About £78. They're still selling them on there. Comes with a 1 year warranty. So far, so good. Time will tell...:)
