Hi

Having set out with the aim of purchasing a tax exempt series to get back to the fun of fiddling, welding etc ended up with a Disco 2 Automatic because the whole family wanted to travel with me in comfort and safety.

So bought car having read up and have stripped out the interior, removed and resealed both sunroofs using Tigerseal and replaced the rubbers and dried out the soaking wet boot before the floor started to rust.

Next step seems to be a TD5alive EGR removal kit - looks worthwile to shed some unnecessary weight and air restrictions etc.

Question is the Disco runs with the temp guage only just out of the cold zone. It still has the viscous fan at the moment. Is this normal or as I suspect should it be mid range and therefore my stat may be stuck open?

Regards

Mine's a 300 Tdi, so different, but runs around midway. Indeed most temp gauges work at midway .. ;)

For average running around the gauge should be at halfway when warmed up.

Sounds like your thermostat is foo-barred.

Well worth changing the thermostat; recently changed mine and the gauge moves up to 1/4 to a 1/3 in a few miles and then halfway after 5 - 10 miles. Bit of a knuckle scraping job and you need a viscous fan removal spanner but worth it.

I've also ditched the EGR, the Disco runs much better now.

Thanks to all for the advice I now have the replacement stat. Do I need a 36 or 32mm flat spanner to remove the fan, or both. In searching around I have seen both sizes offered for the Discovery fan removal? Also seems to be standard not left hand thread - is that correct?
