HI All changed my picture to my new 09 D3 bought in November starting today as there is a four week waiting time at machine shop it was a genuine Chelsea tractor (well Kensington) was told cam belt failed but removed fan belt and tensioner put my finger through hole and low and behold there is indeed a intact cambelt so i think it maybe left hand cam chain, noise when the seller flicked key to demonstrate not seized will be taking cam and rocker cover off over the weekend tricky part is finding all the bits of chain and tensioner. Also a garage started to remove parts to remove the body already found rung off rear brake pipe and the worst top arm bush i have ever seen so should be fun but keeping for myself so will crack on will post a few pics over next two days spent most of the day today removing the handbrake shoes as they had fused themselves to their drums even though they were off ( diagnostic un-seize didnt work emergency pull no effect) so resorted to the Norfolk way big copper hammer removed shoes, pushes nicely now will replace discs and shoes really starting to enjoy semi retirement keep the faith every one TY
 
Yes pretty rust free in general chassis very good i have had this problem with handbrake when stood for a while before (3rd time) shoes seem to stick to the "drums" was pushed to where it was and the dash said today handbrake off came off with a tap or three lots of debris , drums rusty inside enough to rip up lawn when winching will be servicing brakes and the front to back pipes need replacing so all good. Its something to consider if buying a project how long has its stood TY
 
Hi All just removed rocker cover from new project 09 in pic can find no damage visible so decided to pull motor for full inspection put my camera down left injectors borescope not that good picture (what did i expect Evilbay £20) i expected to see black piston top but looks shiny with dark patches seems like there maybe debris on top see what you think will post pics tomorrow will most likely fit used motor as i need a workhorse quickly save this for rebuild and another project so planning so switch over projects have three days off after Saturday so hoping to take out engine then. But first i have to re-shuffle landys and have a tidy no space. Also found rung off brake pipe on rear and a few other interesting things have been removed i think a garage started stripping to remove the body then either give up or gave him an estimate at which point he probably collapsed, will have to nut and bolt check the whole thing, you can get a great deal if you can do the job yourself keep the faith TY
 
Hi all back in the workshop found an engine from a s type done 140k spent today stripping all the jag stuff off will be fitting new belts tensioners and idlers, oil pump, have to change the sump, and injectors and quite a few other bits and bobs if anyone has switched one of these before any heads up on anything would be helpful. First pictures are as it arrived last is with most (apart from sump) jag bits off. Does any know of a blank plug for the oil return for the second turbo? removing injectors and rocker covers tomorrow,

Hi All have answered my own question it seems that 2.7 has the option all ready in place turbos return each side into the block in the jag and return into the sump when fitted to discovery will be using blanks from original block (Didnt know this and only noticed while drinking tea earlier today) everything else is straight swap it seems so far waiting for gaskets and o rings etc. I also had a change of plan an will now be fitting this to a 09 so will be removing the knocking motor over the next week or so will show how i do it in a bit more detail than earlier in this thread keep the faith TY

Thks for the fantastic pics and update , funny enough could tell straight away it was a S jag engine by the red oil filler cap, yeh i know I need to get out more, lol

Plus at least with the motor out it will be a lot easier if u intend to fit a new oil pump, belts etc, including checking the turbo ,, glow plugs etc , hope all goes well mate

Hope you are well, i have been crazy busy at work (and a couple of age related elbow and back issues) only just had time to buy a engine paid £850 seems ok so far trying to switch landys at the moment so i can start on second removal will post more pics tomorrow keep the faith TY

sorry to hear about ur elbow and back, can certainly sympathise my friend regarding ur back , hope it eases up so ur at least out of pain , wonder if some of the medical supports may be useful to u

that’s a great price, me, have been getting some quotes regarding the replacement of my rear lower wishbones , including the rear tie bars and alignment

did also get a battery grease gun and some grease hose extensions as I’m hoping to apply some grease onto the turbos actuator arm, if all else fails I might have to get a new turbo fitted

However my MOT expires mid sep of this year and think I’ll have to let it expire for a few months as I’ll need to try and save enough money in order to at least get the wishbones , tie bars etc , mot done, at least I won’t get into trouble as I’ll leave it parked on my front driveway ,, will keep it taxed and insured , also want to get the leaks found on my AC system, had a dye put in it last time , did look the other night with an ultraviolet torch but couldn’t see anything , did have a good look at the wishbones, tie bars and being honest with myself, know I won’t be able to do them myself , main issues would be getting the wheels on/off or trying to undo and finally torquing the bolts back up

so at the end of the day in all honesty know I won’t be able to do them myself and will have to be without the landy for maybe 3-4 months, I’ll also plug in my charger so at least I know the batteries will be kept topped up

Landy now in workshop well as far as it will fit, have removed slam panel, grill, fan radiator cowling and a few other bits. garage started the rest, will be switching injectors, fuel pump, block water connector, turbo oil feed just single feed plugs into block, return plugs into discovery sump extension and the twin block returns will be plugged with blanks

from original block , alternator, air con, power steering pump and their associated brackets all piping and wiring from discovery still working it out as i go going to have a look under the rocker covers too as changing the cam seals and chains and tensioners also note lack of space can no longer shut doors TY
 
Hi all Can anyone tell me are the green dot in pics factory marks as this engine has done 141k and if so would suggest that the belts have not be changed well at least the tensioners am just curious also one pic shows cam leak keep the faith TY

Hi All Had a few hours on the D3 engine removal today its on stands but doesn't quite fit in workshop i have removed the fan and its cowlings, the top air cleaner tube, lights, expansion tank, wheel trims (front), bumper slam panel and then all the wiring plugs that go to main engine/gearbox/transfer box the latter will be disconnected at the t/box there seems to be a slight difference in the engine looms as in both my 06s the glow plug plugs come from the body loom (under the screen i think,

could be wrong) will check this out. only a couple of other wires to un-plug will come back to that later. The garage that started to do the swap removed quite a few parts that i don't using this method so if i say you don't have to remove this and its not there it wasn't me. I then went under the passenger wheel arch ( don't need to remove liner) i remove the nuts and bolts holding the three turbo heat shields and jiggle them out i unclip the abs and brake pad wires from their clip and pop off the suspension level sensor from its ball this gives more space. At this point you can get to the outer exhaust nut (a bit easier) last job under here is to remove engine mounting nut that's it your done under the wheel arches nothing to do under the other side. My least favorite job on this engine removal is the three exhaust to turbo nuts, two look like pyramids they will need die grinding off probably will try to do this tomorrow before work going, to start underneath Friday hopefully props, g/box cross member, transfer box keep the faith TY
 
Hi All have done all the worst jobs yesterday crossmember supported with jack to remove fuel tank side i remove the outer nut tap back the bolt you can then get the ring end of combination into the small gap holding and undoing from the other side don't forget the wires attached to the top of cm other side is straight forward no need to mess with fuel tank. front prop shaft removed, rear undone at transfer box exhaust then removed bit easier with prop off they all came off ok two from under wheel arch with long 14mm and one from underneath. Then i lower the boxes as much as possible them remove the wiring and clips from the transfer box the rest comes out with the engine and box and the gear selector i mark it. Now the tricky bit separating the trans top bolts i have made a spanner/socket 13mm (see pics) working from behind i remove the awkward top bolts (gearbox and trans supported at this point) the easy ones last trans is now free i have a little gearbox jack under the trans separate and lower out of way will be back up top tomorrow hopefully motor out on Monday keep the faith TY

HI all removed engine yesterday removed the bundle of coolant pipes (see pics) also the pipe from the power steering pump, and the 2 transmission cooling pipes from the radiator (they come out with the engine/box, then remove it in one big chunk, sump and pick up temp removed i think i have covered most of the other bit and bobs disconnected. At this point I attach my lifting thingy which balances the lump well (accidental) i take the weight, alternator and engine mount off this gives space to clear the steering rack then lift and pull carefully box is on a trolley and rolls forward until the weight is off it comes out without even opening bonnet to service mode which is lucky because my roofs too low. A couple of things i have noticed is a few chunks of cam chain tensioner in sump, no sign of metal, oil was as black as your hat, genuine fuel filter which looks ancient, turbo spewing oil and a few assorted oil leaks will be stripping over the weekend no real signs of love poor little v6 a few jobs are fiddly but it's quite a straightforward method and you don't need any special tools just the spanner i made for the top trans bolts, jack, axle stands, and a hoist keep the faith TY
